My daughter is coming home from her mission - Episode 92

“Don’t tell them that they have lost their purpose.” I am so excited my daughter is coming home from her 18 month mission. She has been teaching and serving full time for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This episode is really mostly advice for me to help prepare as we welcome her home. First I share a few of the things that I am worried about. Then I tell you of a few warnings and advice that I learned this week that I think will be really helpful this summer. For example, a warning not to mirror her emotions. Another admonition is that she hasn’t lost her purpose. And a big tip is to make sure to be excited to listen to all of her mission experiences. I learned a lot of great ideas and am feeling confident and calm to welcome her back home.

Show Notes: Hi Friends! I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode. Below are all the references.

Things I learned this week: There are a lot of resources out there for returned missionaries and I am sure there is probably more as this was just an couple of hours of searching.

Grateful for the helpful tips from the podcast a Helping of Happiness and learning about the LDS mission coach Jennie Dildine. She has a lot of helpful advice for parents and resources for your returned missionary. From Jennie I learned a few things that I highlight in the podcast. First, to try to to mirror your missionaries emotions. Second, to make sure not to tell them they have lost their purpose. I love how she describes how a purpose is just a sentence that you decide to believe. So they can decide what they want their next bit of their life to go, and can always have some sort of purpose. The third piece of advice was to be willing to listen to all of their stories and experiences from their mission. This is a super important part of their life and they will want to share it.

A few other things that I learned is to help them keep adulting. So avoid making their doctors or dentists appointments or scheduling other things without their input. As well as making sure they can be helpful at home and in their ward.

The one thing piece of advice I read over and over was to encourage them to keep up on their scripture study. Not just simply reading but writing, thinking and pondering about it and continue to grow in their spirituality.
