“Social Media should be fun!” Camille and her daughter Izzy have a conversation about social media, the good, the bad and the ugly or should we say the too perfect. In this episode, Izzy shares her 3 favorite social media apps, Instagram, Snap Chat and Tik Toc. She shares what she likes and dislikes about each app and also gives a few tips she has learned as she has navigated social media as a teenager.
Tips from Izzy about using social media:
The three platforms we talked about today: Instagram | Snapchat | TicTok
The Good: You can find most people on Instagram. They have a lot of fun filters and you can do polls and such on your story. Encouraging your friends.
The Bad: Since most people are posting the best days it can seem a bit superficial. You can start to feel self conscious and it's easy to pick apart your friends without them even knowing you are doing it.
Snap Chat -
The Good: Fun way to send pictures back and forth. It has the best filters. The memories are a great function. You can use snap chat when taking videos (such as at a concert) and save them and then you don’t have to use up your storage. It is a fun app to just goof off with friends.
The Bad: It does suck up your battery. Parents can be worried since pictures can disappear after 10 seconds.
Tik Toc
The good: Some of the videos can be really funny. It is more about your personality then just about having a perfect picture to share with friends. It’s fun to see things that are trending and try to make a video yourself. It has a creative outlet and most of the time is pretty clean
The bad: It can suck you in. It is really funny sometimes and you can spend way too much tme just watching videos. There may be profanity
General tips: Social media should be fun. It’s an app and you can make it work for you how you would like it too. Be mindful of the time you spend. Don’t worry so much about how many likes you get or how many followers. Try to enjoy ways to connect with people.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by everyone’s too picture perfect lives or any drama that come from social media -- take a break. Cleanse your list of people and make sure they uplift you. Just because your friends in real life doesn’t mean you have to follow them on social media. You can hide people from your feed if you don’t want to unfollow them.
