Episode 169: my drained confidence and how I am getting it back.

my drained confidence and how I am getting it back -  Episode 169

“It’s not the absence of self-doubt, but the ongoing resistance to it.” Bear with me in this episode when I share a confidence draining experience.  Luckily I remembered the book, The Confident Mind, by Dr. Nate Zinsser.  In chapter 5 I was reminded about protecting our confidence through setbacks.  So this episode is a bit of a reminder to me of practical things to do to regain your confidence when a big drain occurs.  Things like looking for my daily progress, effort and success and then stopping the looping confidence killing thoughts and replacing them with thoughts that build energy, enthusiasm, and optimism.

Show Notes:  Hi Friends! I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode.  Below are all the references.

What I learned this week - After an experience of criticism and negative feedback with a volunteer position, I noticed how quickly my confidence was drained.  At first I was emotional and sad and my energy was drained.  Thanks to the information from the book, The Confident Mind by Dr. Nate Zinsser, I was reminded what you can do when you experience a setback.   In chapter 5 of the book, I was reminded of ways to build back up my confidence.  Looking for things throughout my day that are a success, a good effort and noticing progress.  Not only will that helped me bring up my mental filter to a more full level I also need to stop all of the intrusive, draining thoughts and loops that my brain keeps on giving me.  Dr. Zinsser calls this The last word.  I also need to make sure to contain this event - reminded myself that it is temporary, limited, and it is non representational of myself.   I also love the reminder of the Shooter's Mentality (in basketball, soccer, lacrosse, etc)  First, is the habit to remind yourself that every setback is bringing your closer to success and the second habit is that each success breeds more success.  So this setback is bringing me closer to a success.

Quote from the book that I used this episode:

“It’s not the absence of self-doubt, but the ongoing resistance to it.”  (177)

“Is the unfortunate fact that you will have to do it over and over again, and continue doing it over and over again, until you retire from your profession, sport, or field of study.” (177)  Or really they come up all you life

“The internal enemies of doubt, fear, and insecurity can never be ultimately defeated: they are just aspects of the human condition that no one ultimately escapes from.” (177)

Can I also use this experience to get better - like the Shooter Mentality -  2 habits of thought  - that any mistake or setback is actually bringing you closer to success rather than keeping you away from it.  The second habit is the tendency to think that once any success is achieved it will continue and will make other success possible. “ (181)

I can learn from the experience too, but I don't need to be drained by it.   Like the scripture from D&C 122:7, all these things shall give me experience and be for my good.  That is something that I can remind myself when my looping draining thoughts come back in.  Remind myself that I am learning for this experience.

The last thing which I think is really quite hard it to not take things personally.  That it literally is just another person's opinion.  I can learn from that opinion and I can see their side and I can also make sure to see my side as well.

I am super grateful to be reminded of these things to do from the Confident Mind.  It can be tough sometimes but it can also be good to know you can get through things as well.
