Yetton victory but Denny defeat

With an outstanding 20-shot victory over Leicester IBC, Stamford women stormed into the second round of the national inter-club Yetton Trophy.

They will play two rinks home and away simultaneously again in two weeks time against Barwell, who beat Church Gresley by four shots.

At the same time, Stamford men's team lost overall to Barwell 70-81 in the Denny Trophy and will face Grantham in the Denny Plate competition as a first round loser.

Against Leicester, the Stamford women were thankful to emphatic wins by rinks skipped by Rose March and Christine Ford - respectively, one at home and one away - while the two losing rinks played their parts keeping the defeats narrow and respectable.

Partnered by debutant Carolyn Gray, and the experienced Peggy Birch and Sue Moir, the diminutive March helped her quartet to an emphatic 29-14 win. Simultaneously at Leicester, June Brennan, Margaret King, Shirley Suffling and Ford quickly got to grips with the surface to lead 12-2 after just seven ends. They ran out 25-12 victors.

On the adjoining rink Glenys Edwards' four led 18-10 but were eventually overhauled, while Denise Mackie's rink at home fought back from 9-18 and 19-24 behind to crucially close the overall gap.

In the men's match, there were some thunderous bowls delivered at Barwell, where the Stamford away teams in the Denny Cup were performing and when the dust settled it was the Leicestershire side's which proved the more effective.

Joe Dawson's firing shots kept everyone on their toes and helped earn a second round tie with Charnwood after a 29-9 defeat of Simon Law's Stamford quartet.

Tris Morton also sent down some heavyweight shots to kill five ends in a bid to even the score and keep his rink 28-16 ahead by the end. Unfortunately, with Stamford's home players unable to dominate in a similar fashion, it was not enough to swing the tie.

James Harford's rink grabbed two late singles to edge home 17-15 but three shots conceded on the last two ends on Martyn Dolby's rink put the overall result out of reach.

PAIRS SETBACK AT SPALDING

They led 4-1 against internationals Martin Spencer and Chelsea Tomlin but conceded a seven count and as conditions changed were eventually overhauled 20-8.

MIXED PICK UP ONLY A POINT

Stamford mixed team suffered a second successive away defeat in their new campaign back in the First Division of the Lincs League.

Following last week's narrow defeat at Spalding, they found the pedestrian Louth surface less to their liking and emerged with only one point in a 70-123 scoreline.

June Brennan, Arthur Lonslow, Sue Moir and John Little salvaged an 18-18 draw thanks to two shots gained on the last end.

Elsewhere captain Christine Ford, paired with John Suffling and Margaret and Derek King, battled hard only to lose by five, while Mick Smith, Janet Lonslow, Denise Mackie and Ally McNaughton lost by six.
