Club's women face Skegness in next round of Yetton Plate

Stamford's women bowlers have reached the second round of the Yetton Plate - the English club competition for first round losers - by defeating Sleaford 100-63 on Saturday. They now face Skegness who beat Dunholme by 20 shots.

Victory was chiefly down to the success of the away rink skipped by Glenys Edwards and the home rink skipped by Sharon Bailey, winning 38-8 and 32-8 respectively, though it's a competition where every shot is vital for the team.

Having lost to Spalding in the first round proper Stamford had a second chance to show they are one of the most improved women's teams and received much vocal support in the home leg where Bailey rallied her quartet of Jan Want, Margaret Andrews and Shirley Suffling to take command on an end rink which the visitors never mastered.

At Sleaford Joyce Foster, 'Flick' Rogers, Connie Cox and Edwards kept an iron grip on their opposition and rarely allowed them an opening for more than one shot.

Stamford's Mixed team leapt to the top of the Lincs Second Division with a comprehensive defeat of Grantham, securing 16 points out of a possible 18, thanks to four winning rinks.

It was a close-fought tussle across the board until the closing stages when Stamford produced some telling shots to sweep to a 108-83 overall victory - their third in succession after a disappointing relegation last season.

In national competitions Mike Ramsden and Alan Romaine fought out a thrilling battle in the Over 60s singles.

Both at one time held the upper hand but it was Ramsden who finally emerged with two shots on the 27th end to run out the winner 21-20.

In the Over 60s pairs David Hudson and Derek King toppled Tony Barwell and Bruce Acock 32-15 and now await the outcome of the visit of Bob Warters and Martyn Dolby to Boston this week.

Hudson was also in action in the triples at Spalding with Richard Allam and Martin Hewitt but lost out 17-18 to Andy and John Dawson and Simon Lilley.
