With a county selector looking on, Stamford's women bowlers took full advantage of a rare opportunity to overcome the challenge of local rivals Boston, securing 14 valuable points in this first Lincs Trudy Bates League southern section match of the season.

Star-studded Spalding will no doubt produce more fireworks in the national inter-club Yetton Trophy on November 5 but several players caught the eye as Stamford showed both skill and determination against some quality Boston opposition.

Joan Robinson's rink - with Mima MacKellar, Peggy Birch and Margaret Bloxham - took the rink honours with a 20-9 win on Rink One, picking up nine shots in seven successive ends.

But Denise Mackie, alongside Jan Want, Pat Jones and Elizabeth Wallace, also emerged with credit, racing into a 12-2 lead before eventually winning 25-15. In addition there was an 18-11 win for Flick Rogers' rink, claiming three successive singles to help put the overall 89-79 result beyond doubt.
