JUST A POINT FROM VISIT TO HORNCASTLE

With two home games to play against Spalding (March 15) and Lincoln (March 29), Stamford's mixed team still have a chance to escape from the relegation zone of the first division of the Lincolnshire League - indeed with maximum points they can still effect the championship.

However, they were disappointed with bringing back just a single point from the visit to Horncastle on Saturday in which they suffered a 109-74 defeat.

They were quickly on the back foot, conceding 15 shots without reply in the first two ends and it didn't get any better as the home side took full advantage of surface knowledge to build a sizeable lead.

It was left to try to salvage points from the episode but only John Suffling, Carol Warters, Rose March and skip Derek King, with his last bowl, managed a 15-15 draw after conceding six shots in the last five ends.

Reduced to three players when trailing 9-13, with six ends to play, Bob Warters' depleted rink fought back gamely but eventually lost 13-15.

Stamford are currently fifth with 66 points from eight matches - just 17 behind leaders Louth A and ten ahead of bottom-placed Scunthorpe.

Result (Stamford names only):

Lincs Mixed League Division Two: Horncastle 109 (17pts) Stamford 74 (1). J Lonslow, A Lonslow, S Moir, B Warters lost 13-15; E Wallace, A March, D Mackie, P Bailey lost 19-28; T Barwell, M Holden, S Suffling, M Wallace lost 17-23; J Suffling, C Warters, R March, D King drew 15-15; M King, L Cave, Mick Smith, D Cave lost 10-27.

FORD AND BRENNAN THROUGH

June Brennan and Christine Ford have reached the final stages of the EIBA Over 60s pairs with a 21-15 defeat of Sharon Cobb and her partner from Carlton at Melton IBC.

They will play the winner of the Area 10 final between Riverain and Bounds Green at Nottingham on April 8 (9.30am). BW
