Hopes of Stamford reaching the third round of the national Egham Trophy - a mixed fours competition played at home and away simultaneously - were dashed by Barwell on Sunday.

While at home, Stamford held their own with a narrow two-shot aggregate advantage over two rinks, the Leicestershire club proved too strong on their own surface. The Stamford away rinks skipped by Roger Martin and Paul Bailey were 19-56 behind when they conceded with still a handful of ends to play against the highly regarded Chris Moore and Joe Dawson.

At Stamford, the Barwell players proved very competitive against rinks skipped by Martyn Dolby and James Harford who quickly realised, when the initial scores came through after five and ten ends, they would have their work cut out to keep the tie alive.

Four-shot counts on the eighth and 11th ends and a run of closing singles kept the Dolby rink in command but conceding four on the 17th end prevented the Harford rink from staging a threatened comeback.

Result (Stamford names only):

Egham Trophy: Stamford 54 Barwell 88. Home - Jan Want, Chris Ford, John Holroyd, Martyn Dolby won 21-11; Wayne Aspinall, Moira Holroyd, Katie Bailey, James Harford lost 14-21. Away - Richard Allam, Sue Moir, Denise Mackie, Paul Bailey lost 7-30; Elizabeth Wallace, Shirley Suffling, Mick Humphreys, Roger Martin lost 12-26.
