End of Summer

With the rain teaming down I write that the summer season at the indoor bowls club is drawing to an end. The summer leagues are all but won with the champions having been already decided in all but one of them. With one game left to play 'The Wakes' are the undisputed champions by an amazing 12 point margin in the first division of the Wednesday league despite their being one game left to play. They have now won the title for four consecutive seasons and the other teams in the division are muttering about having a handicap system next season.

They must wait to see which of three teams joins them as runners up following the final game. In the second division of that league the 'Geriatrics' (they named themselves not me!) are the champions and 'Pic'n Mix' the runners up despite their also being a game left to play in this division.

The Tuesday mid day pairs league and Friday evening league have now completed their campaign with 'Carnations' winning the Tuesday league followed by 'Roses' and 'Imps winning the Friday league followed by 'Cortina'.

The Monday league still remains undecided with two matches left to play but being eight shots clear only 'Charlie' and 'Delta' are in contention with one shot separating them.

This summer saw the introduction of a drawn pairs knockout competition which was well supported and produced some excellent competition all the way through. The final was fiercely contested between Shaun Murphy & Janet Lonslow against Jeff & Jeanette Bourne. In fact it was such a good game to watch that the spectators were on their feet when Jeff sent down his last bowl with the scores level. Jeff couldn't bear to watch his bowl on the way down but it steered into the head gently picking up the jack and nestling it against one of his wife's bowls to pick up the two shots they needed to win the match.

Whilst all this has been going on indoors many of our winter indoor bowlers have been braving the outside world. Particular mention should be made of young Stephen Harris who together with teammate Darren Middleton, from his outdoor club, Blackstones, was successful in winning the National English Bowling Federation Under 25 Pairs held on the Suncastle Greens at Skegness this week. Well done Stephen.
