Friendly team feel "Blue" at Lincoln

Here we go again, our opening weekend friendly of the season against, for the first time, Lincoln. On the way, roads closed, diversions, sat navs thrown into disarray. They are building a by-pass around Lincoln, no comment. Don’t mention football, they lost six nil at home.

For many of us this was our first visit to the county town’s club and we were highly impressed with their welcome and facilities, including their brand new luxurious blue carpet. Our only player who wasn’t too happy was Linda Cave whose brand new luxurious blue bowls disappeared completely after reaching halfway down the rink. (Note to all blue bowlers, something to think about when voting for the colour of a new carpet). Anyway on to the match, after five ends we were leading 25-22 thanks mainly to Maurice (the Uke) Dye’s rink who were 5-1 up, Dave Edwards’ 7-2 and Derek Cave’s 5-3.

After an enforced toilet break, which took longer than expected, couldn’t get the hand dryer to work, the scoreboard say’s we are leading 37-25. Don’t get too excited. Five minutes later we’re losing 38-37. What’s going on! Our lead on rink seven, (yes they’ve got more than six rinks) Reg comes off saying he’s always got a bad neck, yes of course you have Reg, but nobodies interested, only that you’re 10-5 down. Anyway at the halfway stage, nine ends played, it’s all square 49-49. The message goes out from our captain Maggie who’s sitting on the sidelines “Take the tablets now”! Dave (The Voice) Edwards’ trio streaked into the best rink position 13-7, the tablets must have worked. Reg’s neck seems to be better all of a sudden as they’ve now gone ahead on his rink 12-10, keep the crowds back please.

On rink five skip Ken White’s still talking about trains to his counterpart who’s just fallen asleep. After eleven ends we are still in with a shout, only five down 66-59. But, disaster strikes, the dreaded slippery slope sees us slip further behind over the last seven ends with only Derek Cave’s threesome getting the best of the opposition to finish up as our best rink. The overall final score was wiped off the scoreboard before anyone could write it down. But who cares, it’s the playing that really counts.

Rink scores : Ken Rawlins, Colin Burgess, Dave Edwards lost 17-21, Janet Dye, Vanessa Shackleton, Maurice Dye lost 9-18, Linda Cave, Alison Lea, Derek Cave won 19-13; Ann Preston-Bambridge, Cherry Burgess, Jenny Desborough lost 13-20, Howard Neath, Pam Heather, Ken White lost 11-16; Reg Goode, Serena Brunning, Jill Goode won 17-16.

Next match is against Boston at home. Anyone who’s interested in playing in any of our weekend friendlies put you name down for possible selection. The team sheets are posted on the notice board opposite the bar. D.S.
