Eighteen teams of four contested the Stamford Indoor Bowls Club Christmas tournament on Tuesday, sponsored by Molson Coors brewery suppliers, and won by David Howarth's rink which emerged unbeaten.

The teams played four 7-end matches, scoring points for ends and matches won with Howarth's quartet of Alan and Christine Barnes and late substitute Andy Speechley, winning three and drawing one on their schedule to claim 28 points, three ahead of their nearest rivals, to claim the £80 first prize.

Second place went to Dave Hudson, Margaret Bloxham, Bruce Acock and Cliff Watson on 25 points two better than the Holroyd family - John, his wife Moira and daughter Helen with Mick Humphreys - who also won three and drew one in two closely contested sections.

The event was organised by club secretary Carol Warters and administered by Peter Edwards and Nina Rawlins.

The club re-opens on January 3.

Three Stamford bowlers competed in the Spalding Open singles this week.

Christine Ford and Mike Ramsden lost in the first round to Davd Bristow (7-2, 8-1) and Terry Berridge (7-7, 11-1.) respectively but Stephen Harris beat Scott Whyers and Chris Bennett before losing to Tom Holmes (Mid Glos) in the last 16.

The event was won by Mark Royal who beat Nick Brett in the final.
