From A to B, Stamford teams start on losing note...

THE NEW weekend county league season for Stamford Indoor Bowls Club's men's teams started without much success, both gaining only four of the 18 points available from their respective opening first and second division fixtures.

At Boston, the Stamford A team failed to take advantage of a weakened home side, emerging with only two winning rinks and a 25-shot defeat after holding their opponents on level terms with just seven ends to play.

Stamford were without several regulars of their own but the defeat exposed some rustiness after an outdoor season and lack of strength in depth in key areas.

However, captain Adam Warrington says he is confident the team will have another good season - they finished third in the league and reached the last eight of the national Denny Plate - once the side is strengthened.

The Stamford B team, promoted from the third division, were given a baptism of fire by visiting Louth A, relegated from Division One, but now under the guidance of new club manager Simon Reeson, a seasoned county stalwart when at Boston.

They lost the match by only 13 shots but it might have been different had captain Dennis Henshaw's rink been able to capitalize on three 'killed' ends.

The club's latest bid to attract potential new members proved a big hit on Saturday (Sept 26) when more than 30 took advantage of the second Open morning to try the sport.

Coaches and experienced players were on hand to offer advice on the fundamentals of the game and it was quickly apparent that several were able to develop a natural ability to deliver their bowl with the correct pace and accuracy.

Most promised to return on subsequent Saturday mornings to polish their skills under the guidance of our team of coaches.
