Men Taste Denny Plate Success

Stamford indoor bowlers will play defending champions Melton for a place in the third round of the men’s Denny Plate on December 10.

They earned the right with an aggregate 92-56 defeat of neighbours Grantham, winning on all four rinks - two at home and two away, played simultaneously. Melton beat Church Gresley (Derbyshire) 78-55.

The competition is for clubs who lost in the first round of the Denny Cup.

Stamford stormed into an early 46-25 ten-end lead against Grantham, thanks chiefly to the efforts of away rinks skipped Martyn Dolby and Adam Warrington, which led 14-2 and 14-5 respectively against Jay Lewis and Martin Pulling, while the Stamford home rinks were holding their own.

It was an overall lead Stamford never relinquished with Dolby’s rink of Wayne Aspinall, Dusty Miller and Jon Earl stretching their lead to 25-6 and Warrington’s quartet winning 21-16 despite the heroics of Pulling saving a bunch of shots.

At Stamford meanwhile, Trevor Collins’ quartet included a 7-count on the 15th when trailing and Roger Martin’s rink sneaked a win with three on the last end.

MIXED DEFEAT

Stamford’s Mixed team are still without a win in the Lincs League (South) after suffering a home defeat by nine shots against Grantham.

The visitors claimed all but four of the points available, thanks chiefly to a rink skipped by former Stamford player Paul Bailey which won by 23 shots.

SENIORS ON A CHARGE

Taking all but one of the 14 points at stake in their 96-55 defeat of Spalding, Stamford seniors moved within ten of runaway leaders Lincoln A in the Lincs Over 60s League (South).

They have conceded only seven points in their last three games - two of them away from home - which will have sent a positive message to multiple champions Lincoln A whom they visit on December 8.

While the rinks of Kevin Vinter and Bob Warters won convincingly, credit to the rink of Tony Barwell, Steve Miner, Don Bruce and Trevor Collins who fought back from 4-13 to win 18-14. Roger Martin’s quartet conceded two shots on the last end to tie.
