Hunted Huntingdon

It was eight thirty on Thursday evening and everyone, including the cat, was snoozing peacefully, when suddenly the phone rang. “Hello its Huntingdon Indoor Bowls Club, we can only get sixteen players for Sunday, can you help us out?” That’s not the best news that our Weekend Friendly Captain Maggie wanted to hear on being awoken from her evening slumber. “Of course we can” she replied, aiming a kick at the cat as he slunk by (only joking). So a call to two of her long list of reserves asking them to play for the opposition. “No problem” said the first, “How much is it worth?” said the second. “A kick up the ‘you know what’ if you don’t” was our friendly leader’s reply. So that was settled. Don’t you believe it! There was a message on Maggie’s mobile phone on Saturday morning. “Hello, Huntingdon here, it’s ok we’ve got another two players so we don’t need yours.” Retrieving her phone from the bottom of the garden after it had bounced off two trees and just missed the cat, Maggie rang back. Ring, ring ...answer phone. “Hello Huntingdon bowls club, what a lovely morning. I can’t tell our two people that they can’t play, so we’ll have five rinks of six and one of eight. You can have one of my spare players.” end of message. She wished she hadn’t slammed the phone down on the marble work surface. It hasn’t worked since.

What about the match, well we showed them that it doesn’t pay to mess with us and our still seething captain; we beat them by a total of 121-79. The main damage to the opposition was inflicted by skip Derek (the deadly) Cave and his fearsome three (pictured), with an impressive 24-6 pounding. Well done everyone, on to the next one – “The destruction of Desborough” we hope.Rink scores: Denis Stapleton, Carolyn Gray, Peter Gray, Derek Cave won 24-6 ; Jenny Desborough, Maggie Holden, Dave Edwards won 21-9 ; Judith Childs, Colin Burgess, Adrian Childs lost 14-15 ; Rosemary Roberts, Margaret Grainger, Ken White lost 11-18 ; Linda Cave, Ann Preston Bambridge, Nigel Trigg won 21-11. Reg Goode, Serena Brunning, Jill Goode won 28-20.
