CONTINUING its policy of introducing the sport of bowls to schoolchildren and young adults, Stamford Indoor Bowls Club hosted a group of pupils and staff from the Wilds Lodge School, near Empingham, an independent specialist boarding and day provision for boys with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

The children aged from nine to 12, were given different bowls skills tasks by the club's youth co-ordinator Mike Ramsden, assisted by coach Keith Rippin and other members and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of trying something new.

They then insisted on staying on to watch a league match at the club and asked many questions about the sport, the equipment and the rules.

Stamford IBC is planning a series of late afternoon sessions on a Thursday to encourage youngsters.

Those interested are asked to contact the club by email: stamfordindoorbowls@btconnect.com

HOPES of reaching the national finals of the Over 50s triples for Stamford bowlers Bob Warters, Tony Scarr and Roger Martin were dashed at the Area final stage.

In a tight, competitive match at Lincoln they were beaten by Danny Brown's trio 20-14.

After reducing an early deficit, Martin's trio fought back to 9-9 at half way including two four-counts before their opponents scored eight without reply in four ends and led 20-13 going into the penultimate end. Martin killed the 17th but it only delayed the inevitable.
