In the Over 60 Double rink Stamford's senior men bowlers have emulated the women by also reaching the quarter-finals of this national competition.

They took on North Cave from East Yorkshire at Lincoln IBC as a neutral venue because the team were more than 100 miles apart, and won on both rinks by ten shots for an overall 44-24 victory. It puts them in the last 16 against the holders, Nottingham A who knocked out Leicester.

North Cave had earlier knocked Stamford out of the Denny Plate.

Both rinks - skipped by Roger Martin and Martyn Dolby - took a few ends to get to grips with the faster Lincoln surface before their respective leads and No.2s began to set up opportunities.

With 12 shots in six successive ends Martin's quartet cruised into a 12-3 lead which they never relinquished, while Dolby's four captured 17 shots without reply after trailing 6-9 from the sixth and finally ran out winners 25-15.

Result ( Stamford names only):

Over 60s Double Rink (at Lincoln): North Cave 24 Stamford A 44. Bob Warters, Malcolm Cullingworth, Derek King, Roger Martin won 19-9; Dave Hudson, Doug Want, Peter Edwards, Martyn Dolby won 25-15.

North Cambs Federation has announced it has withdrawn its team from the Newton Trophy county second string league this summer. Short of players and without a captain, the county felt it was unable to sustain a team in the competition.

However, they will continue to contest the Adams Trophy, six-rink, two-bowl triples team event.
