MEN's COUNTY LEAGUE NEWS

Men’s inter-club bowls for indoor clubs in Lincolnshire returns for the new winter season at the weekend, when Stamford’s A and B teams play Spalding and Boston A respectively.

Under the captaincy of Tony Barwell, Stamford A visit Spalding on Saturday while Pete Linnell’s B team host southern section holders Boston A. Both have 2pm starts.

With several players unavailable, it has been a headache for Barwell - a member of the county side which reached the national final of the seniors knock-out in April- but he has taken advantage of rules which allow players to represent both the A and B sides in the same season without being cup-tied.

He will also identify early pointers for selection in the club’s Denny Cup clash - also against Spalding - on November 5.

As for the B team, they too are without a few regulars but Linnell is confident that home advantage could offer the opportunity for a possible upset against last season’s champions.

Teams: Stamford A (away to Spalding) - Wayne Aspinall, Derek Veasey, Owen Aspinall, Chris Ballard; Mick Linnell, Mike Ramsden, Paul Dalliday, Simon Law; Richard Allam, John Suffling, Bob Warters, Trevor Collins; Tony Barwell, Dave Heffernan, Neil Wright, Roger Martin.

Stamford B (home to Boston A) - Pete Linnell, Martin Wallace, Sam Downs, Darren Middleton; Mick Smith, Dick Ford, Mick Owens, Ally McNaughton; Henry Gordon, John Suffling, Denis Henshaw, Dave Heffernan; Ken Rawlins, Ron Blake, Keith Rippin, Maurice Dye. Reserves Bill Orme, Charlie Jones.

ROCKY START FOR THE MIXED TEAM

Stamford IBC’s mixed team had a disappointing start to their Lincolnshire IBA league season, picking up just one point from their opening fixture at Boston.

Shirley Suffling’s team were hopeful they could grab a handy share of the points but the slick surface proved a tricky adjustment from Stamford’s carpet and it was left to Derek King to pull off a late conversion to steal a single point from the 14 available.

Linda and Derek Cave and Geordie King were among those who made promising debuts but in the end, the home side proved too strong on their own familiar surface.

Result: Lincs Mixed League (South): Boston 95 (13 pts) Stamford 46 (1). Stamford names only - Ian Hall, Rose March, Stella Henshaw, Alec March lost 11-22; Margaret King, John Suffling, Chris Ford, Derek King drew 19-19; Janet Lonslow, Geordie King, Shirley Suffling, Bob Warters lost 9-32; Linda Cave, Carol Warters, Mike Ramsden, Derek Cave lost 7-22.
