JAY Travis-Jenner becomes the first Stamford player this season to compete in an EIBA national final after defeating England International Ruby Hill in the Area final of the Under 18 singles at Boston.

He secured a straight sets win (9-8, 9-6) over the Spalding youngster who represented her country in Western Samoa recently.

The former Welland Academy pupil now meets Craig Moss from Suffolk at Spalding on Sunday, March 13.

Stamford men's B team are battling hard to stave off relegation from the Second Division of the Lincs County League, claiming their third successive win, this time against Sleaford, by 11 shots overall.

And it proved a memorable 89th birthday celebration for Wally Kettle, whom with Charlie Jones, David Heffernan and the in-form Trevor Christie, secured the best winning rink prize with a 28-14 victory to help Stamford claim 14 of the 18 points available.

From 4-10 behind Christie's rink picked up 24 shots in the next 12 ends, while Peter Banks' rink dropped 10 shots in the last five ends but still prevailed 25-18. Elsewhere captain Dennis Henshaw ran out a 26-18 winner.

Stamford B remain three points behind Skegness in the relegation zone and will be looking for vital points from their last matches away to Long Sutton and Spalding.

K Rawlins, R Graham, J Geary, C Ballard lost 20-25; W Kettle, C Jones, D Heffernan, T Christie won 28-14; T Barwell, M de Camps, P Linnell, D Henshaw won 26-16; D Howarth, D Bruce, T Mackie, P Banks won 23-18; A Lonslow, D Veasey, N Graham, M Hewitt lost 16-27.

Northants Bowling Federation competitions are reaching the semi-final stage where president Bob Warters suffered a 20-21 home defeat by City veteran Mick Linnell in the Senior Singles, in his bid to secure an outdoor/indoor county double. Warters led 11-4 and 15-12 but the determined Linnell overhauled him in the tense final stages.

In the mixed triples, Cliff Watson joined Glenys and Peter Edwards against Fiona Richardson, Neil Wright and Simon Law and were always on the back foot against the Peterborough trio who ran out 20-13 winners.

Stamford's Northants County President Joan Robinson will have to put her chain of office on one side when she competes in the finals at the county indoor championships at Peterborough on March 15 after she beat Christine Ford in the semi-finals of the senior singles 21-17.

Joan also knocked out clubmate Shirley Suffling 21-8 in the four bowl singles. In the same competition, Carol Warters gave Julie Masters a challenge, levelling at 15-15 but finally lost by six.

Margaret Andrews and Sue Moir are through to the semi-finals of the Lincs Women's pairs at Horncastle next month after two outstanding wins in the qualifiers at Spalding.

Andrews stepped in to replace Margaret Bloxham against fellow Stamford clubmates June Brennan and Christine Ford and after a titanic tussle won 21-20 before securing a semi-final place by defeating Sleaford's Pat Rand and Lily Searle 21-17.
