Mixed Team Revival & Obituary

After picking up just seven points from three defeats in the Lincs Mixed League (South), Stamford finally landed their first win, at home to Skegness.


It doesn’t lift them off the bottom of the table but offers some hope for a revival ahead of their next match at Grantham in the New Year.


Their latest 12 points from a possible 14 came from three winning rinks - the best of which included Henry Gordon, Val Du’Kett, Martin Wallace and Chris Ford who converted an early 16-2 lead into a 26-9 triumph.

SENIORS BACK ON TRACK


By taking maximum points at home to Grantham, Stamford Seniors got back on track in their chase to challenge for the Lincs Over 60s League title.


Their 114-55 win, which promoted them back to second spot behind Lincoln A, was also revenge for an earlier defeat in the opening game of the season.


Leading the 14-point haul were rinks skipped by Roger Martin and Kevin Vinter - the latter taking the rink honours 35-11.

DOUG WANT - PROLIFIC AT CRICKET AND BOWLS

Local sport is mourning the death of Doug Want - a prolific former cricketer and Stamford Indoor Club bowler. He celebrated his 81st birthday in June.

During a successful cricket career, he was a regular wicket-taker for Empingham with local batsman often falling to his pace.

Later he switched to bowls, representing Ketton and Stamford IBC and won Northants Federation county titles to reach the outdoor national championships at Skegness and the indoor finals at Newark. He also won several club titles at Stamford IBC in senior singles, pairs, triples and fours.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Condolences to his widow Jan and their family.

Funeral arrangements for the late Margaret Bloxham are now known.

The funeral will be on Wednesday 11th January at 11am in All Saints Church, Stamford.

WHY NOT TRY BOWLS?

Stamford Indoor Bowls Club is inviting potential new members to try bowls with a free introductory session on Saturday, January 14 (10am - 4pm).

It’s six rink stadium is one of the best in the East Midlands and provides a perfect opportunity to both play and watch.

Experienced bowlers and coaches will be on hand to encouraged newcomers aged from eight to 80, with equipment provided.

The facility, totally run by volunteers, also has a viewing gallery, restaurant and bar and during the winter months is open seven days a week.

Stamford Indoor Bowls on Tour to Norfolk

The club will be again be going to the Potters Leisure complex, at Hopton on Sea in Norfolk in 2023, which will next month will be hosting the World Bowls Championships.

Having been to this excellent venue many times, having won the top club trophy on a couple of occasions, the holiday which is all inclusive, is filling up quickly and there are now only a limited number of bungalow accommodations' available.
