With a 104-88 defeat of Louth A, Stamford Indoor Bowls Club's men's A team kicked off their Lincolnshire League Division One season on a positive note on Sunday, writes Bob Warters.

But they were disappointed to drop six points at home and were grateful to the rinks skipped by Peter Edwards and Martin Bailey to steer them to an overall 12-6 points win.

On a fast-running carpet compared to what they have been used to in the past and against a settled team from the north of the county, a new-look Stamford found themselves adrift by 20 shots early on as rinks skipped by Adam Warrington and Keith Rippin struggled to make an impact.

However, each pulled back vital shots as the match progressed while the two winning rinks, thanks to some impressive front end play to set up scoring opportunities, retained a stranglehold on the overall result.

On Saturday 12 Oct, Stamford B visit Boston and the following day a Stamford team of 11 entertain Boston in the English Top Club event, playing men's and women's singles and mixed pairs, triples and fours.
