Open Weekend brings in new bowlers

When Stamford Indoor Bowls Club hosted its Open Weekend, not only did the publicity surrounding it attract potential local bowlers but one even travelled from Cheshire to take part.

The crown bowler, looking for a replacement indoor club when his nearest venue closed in Blackpool, travelled several hours to take part and was impressed by the six-rink facilities.

However, having thanked the Stamford volunteers for their welcome and support, he has since found an alternative club in Wales only an hour from his home and plans join there instead.

More than 50 turned up to receive free tuition from coaches and experienced bowlers and access to equipment, including Mrs Dyl Powell, retired former headmistress of Stamford High School.

The club, in Exeter Gardens, is hopeful most will sign up to regular coaching sessions on subsequent Saturday mornings.

Celebrating its 34th season, SIBC is open for both social and competitive sessions. Roll-ups are held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings and can be booked in advance. Domestic leagues and inter-club competitions are also held at other times during the day and on midweek evenings.

In addition to its six-rink playing surface, it also features a restaurant, bar and viewing gallery.
