Teacher Help

TRY THIS:

As there were many opportunities provided for students to answer and or ask questions I want to challenge you to incorporate the strategy "give it back to the students" to provide opportunity for peer to peer conversation when a student asks a question … you simply say " does anyone have any thoughts about this question" or " what do you guys think about this question?" "does anyone know the answer?" providing two different opportunities 1. for students to validate the question 2. for other students to demonstrate mastery. This can be done with use of the chat: Numbers can be dropped using this strategy i.e. drop a 1 if you have the same question and a 2 if you know the answer to the question Other opportunities to "give it to the students" will come organically as you facilitate your lessons. Explanations or clarity you typically provide can instead be prompted for student discussion. In this remote world use of the chat can prove successful when using this strategy. In particular 1-2-3 submit strategy in which you present a question give the students 1 minute to write response then count 1-2-3 and everyone submit together can be used.  (May 2021 Observation w APAP)

John Dewey High School Grading Policy:

45, NL, NS, NX - See below (Special Grades).

55 - Failing grade, must be consistent with academic performance and class/department policy.

65 – 100 Passing grades, may be issued in one point increments.

P or F – Use Pass or Fail for PM School ONLY.

45 indicates academic failure and that the student has been absent more than 90% of

the time. This is for a student who has attended your class 10 times or less throughout the semester.

NL indicates a student who is a new admit to the school, and/or who is a new admit to

your class. You can use this grade if the student was admitted to your class after

December 2nd, 2016, and you believe have not completed enough course work to earn a

passing grade.

* Please be aware that as per state regulations, any student who is a new admit and receives a grade of NL has the ability to earn course credit through the next semester. In conjunction with guidance, please be prepared to provide coursework to assist with this student in earning course credit. *

NS - Use NS for students who NEVER appeared in your class. If a student was

physically present in your class at least one day, you may NOT use this grade.

NX - Use NX for students to give an Incomplete grade due to extenuating circumstances.

For information or clarification on the use of NL, NS and NX, please see New York City

Department of Education High School Academic Policy.

b. There must be at least two comments for any student who is failing the class.
