PSA Poster 4                 Silhouettes

1. Lesson Goals 

SWBAT:

...create drawings for their PSA Posters

...review FILL & STROKE options

...place INTERNET IMAGES into AI files and LOCK them

...use the PEN TOOL to outline SILHOUETTES


2. Review Previously Seen PSA AI Drawings

The orange profile is a good example of a silhouette.  

Skills learned from the Radial Symmetry assignment could be used to draw the other shapes

3. Download and Rename Silhouettes File

1. Right-click on the closed file name

2, Name all files the following way:

PROJECT NAME (space) LAST NAME

(space) FIRST NAME (dot) FILE EXTENSION

Example: Silhouettes Hooker Martina.ai

4. Set Up Fill & Stroke

1. Select the pen tool

2. Go to the Tool Box and set the Fill to None and the Stroke to a bright color that you will be able to see


5. Outline Silhouette of Leaf : 2 Strategies (Easy or Hard)

1. Select the Pen Tool

2. Click somewhere on the outside edge of the leaf to create a point

3. Choose the EASY or HARD strategy

• EASY: Click further along the leaf edge to create another point and a straight line segment will appear

• HARD: Click and drag to create a curved line segment.

4. Keep clicking (or clicking and dragging) until you have outlined the entire leaf


DEFINITIONS:

• SILHOUETTE: The outline or general shape of an object. No interior details are included.

• INTUITIVE: something done from instinct or something that is easy to use

• COUNTERINTUITIVE: something that goes against what you believe would be logical, or something that goes against common sense

6.  Find 3 PSA Images to Trace: 

1. Search for Images for your poster.

2. Use the following guidelines when choosing your images

• COMPLETE IMAGES -Nothing cut off/obstructed (unless that's your plan)

• NON-ART IMAGES (plain photos) were traced,no drawings, paintings, digital renderings

• Shapes are INTERESTING

Copy and paste extra non-PSA related images to meet the criteria of 3 if needed


7.  Add Photos to Silhouette File

1. Right click on the Internet image (see previous section if you missed what to search for)

2. Choose "Copy Image" from the menu

3. Activate your Silhouettes file

4. Edit > Paste

5. SCALE up/down with the Selection tool IF NEEDED.  Click and drag on a corner tab and don't forget to constrain proportions by holding the SHIFT KEY


8.  Lock The Image

1. Select the photo with the selection tool

2. Lock it so it doesn't move when you are working on outlining it.

Object Menu > Lock > Lock Selection

9. Outline Silhouette of Image

1. Select the Pen Tool

2. Click somewhere on the outside edge of the object to create a point

3. Choose the EASY or HARD strategy

4. Keep clicking (or clicking and dragging) until you have outlined the entire object

10. Add & Outline Other Images

1. Add and outline your other two images

2. Include inside details

11. Extension

1. Add and outline additional images of same them or a new one

13. Submit

1. Save your work before you hand it in!

2. Click on the Submit Folder Link for your class below
