Salvador Dali, Persistence of Memory, 1931, Oil on Canvas

About

Surrealism is a cultural movement that started in 1917 and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. Artists painted...illogical scenes... creating strange creatures from everyday objects... Its aim was...to "resolve the ...contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality", or surreality.

Works of surrealism feature the element of surprise and unexpected juxtapositions.

Surrealism developed ... during World War I. The most important center of the movement was Paris, France. From the 1920s onward, the movement spread around the globe, impacting the visual arts, literature, film, and music...

What does Surreal mean?

Salvador Dali, Sleep, 1937, Oil on Canvas

NB Do Now 1/29/20

The adjective surreal comes from Surrealism, a movement that produced art that often contained irrational, disjointed images.

So, surreal describes something that's a bizarre mix of elements, often jarring and seemingly nonsensical.

NB Do Now 1/30/20

Who were some famous surrealists and when did the Surrealist Art movement start?

NB Do Now 1/30/20

Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte were two famous surrealists.  Surrealism started in Europe in 1917 and remains a strong influence to this day.

NB Do Now 1/30

Most drawings are done carefully and have details while a sketch only needs to show  WHAT will be included, WHERE the different elements will be and HOW they will be represented.

A sketch can be very rough and even ONLY UNDERSTANDABLE to the artist who draws it.
