Project Goals

SWBAT

1. Learn to use TEXTURES and PATTERNS from the INTERNET to create original HIGH RESOLUTION art

2. Use MARCHING ANT selections and LAYER selections to copy and paste TEXTURES & PATTERNS

3. Use LAYER FOLDERS and ADJUSTMENT LAYERS to create UNITY and CONTRAST


2. Lesson Goals (1 Day)

SWBAT:

1...understand the basic goals for the Texture Theme project

2. Set up Texture Theme files in Adobe Photoshop

3..Type & format their Theme Words as specified in the lesson

4. Understand that Vector Images are Resolution independent.

3. File Set Up

1. Load ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

2. File > New.

3. Name: "Texture Theme" followed by a space, your last name and then your first.

Example: 

Texture Theme Hooker Martina

4. Enter all of the other settings you see to the left

4. Review Definitions of Texture & Pattern

Texture refers to the way the surface of an object actually feels when touched. More About Texture

A Pattern is a repeated form or design especially that is used to decorate something

5.   Choose a Theme and Theme Word

1. Start by thinking about your interests and hobbies

Example Theme: 

Architecture

2. Try to imagine textures/patterns that are associated

Example Textures & Patterns: 

Brick, Wood, Tile, Iron, Concrete

3. Come up with a THEME WORD

Example Theme Words: 

Architecture, House, Building, Structure,


6. Type Theme Word in a Chunky Font

1. Select the Type Tool

2. Open the Character Palette or use the

Options Bar and enter one of the fonts listed

to the left.

3. Click (do not drag) with the Type Tool anywhere on your file.

4. Type in your Theme Word

(If you have more than 11 letters in your name try to use a nickname with fewer letters but no less than 4)

7.  Scale up the Text

1. Edit > Transform (Command T) and scale up your word so it is centered nicely and fills the page as shown in the example (left).

TEXT layers can be scaled up in Photoshop because they are VECTOR graphics.

VECTOR graphic images are...

• Made up of POINTS and LINE SEGMENTS

• RESOLUTION INDEPENDENT (can be scaled up)

• Examples: Adobe Illustrator Graphics, MS Word

RESOLUTION INDEPENDENT means that the image QUALITY always stays the same

8.  Rasterize Your Text Layer

1. Right -Click on your text layer in the Layers Palette and choose "Rasterize Type"

RASTERIZE means to CONVERT VECTOR into PIXELS (RASTER / BITMAP) images

9.  Use FX to Create 3 Different Values

1. Click on the FX icon at the bottom of your layers palette

2. Choose Bevel & Emboss and enter all the settings you see in the sample (left)

10.  Extension

Options:

1. Create a second Theme Folder and name it Theme Folder 2 Last Name First Name

2. Select the letters individually and transform them (See Left).

11.  Assessment

Compare you text to sample shown left
