1. Review Magazine Covers again.
2. Notice that 95% of the fonts chosen are very simple serif or sans serif fonts
Sans serif = more modern, technology, younger audience (usually)Serif = more traditional, older audience (usually)Decorative fonts are often hard to read create too specific a feeling3. Notice that the Masthead stands apart from the other text because the Masthead is...
• Large - often width of magazine and about 2 inches in height• Separate - positioned at the top allowing for a barrier of space between it and other text elements1. Use Point type and make your text large just as you did with the Digital Masthead.
2. Format your text with a font that matches the tone of your Magazine. Make sure it is easy to read
3. Position your text wit the Move tool, not spaces
4. Experiment with case, tracking, etc. Show thoughtful decision making.
PRO TIPS:
Script fonts should not be in all caps.
Title case is easier to read
Click HERE to open Adobe Fonts. com
Design Tip: Pair a Serif Font (Advanced) with a Sans Serif (Photoshop)
5. If you have more than one word in your magazine title and you're planning for two lines (see Advanced Photoshop left), put each word in a separate point type layer so you can easily position, format and scale each word independently.
Review what colors are in your photo and choose one for your Masthead color.
Consider whether your choice will help make your masthead easy to read; choose a different color if you realize the color won't make the text stand out.
With your masthead highlighted with the Type tool, sample the color from your photo to apply it to your text
Apply at least one layer style to your masthead but make sure it's not too flashy and doesn't interfere with the legibility.
SAMPLE COLORS:
When you are using the Type Tool or working with layer styles, you can use the COLOR PICKER's Eyedropper. Open the color picker by clicking on the color swatch icon. Sample colors from anywhere you want on your file by clicking. Do not select the Eyedropper tool from the tools panel; you need to open the color picker panel while working with the type tool or layer styles.
Go to the Text & Thumbnails assignment and look at your Thumbnail Sketches to review what you planned for placement of the remaining text that needs to be added (Cover Story Title with its Subhead and the 3 or more Teasers and Subheads)
If needed, review how you made THE TREND ISSUE area (paragraph) type for the DIGITAL assignment (Page 183)
Open your Magazine Cover Text document from your Google Drive
Review your Cover Story Title and Subhead
Edit the Cover Story Title if it's more than 3 words (ask for help if needed)
Highlight the text. Edit > Copy
Open your Cover.psd file
Click and drag to create a new Area Type layer. Edit > Paste
See screenshot (left) and read about the different ways you can use the Type Tool and the Move tool on area type.
When you see a plus sign at the lower right corner of your area Type rectangle, it means that there is hidden text and you should click on a white tab with the type tool and resize the rectangle to reveal the hidden text. See screenshot (right).
If you only want layer styles on the Title and not on the Subhead, you will have to split your text into two layers. (see above)
Make your Cover Story Title and subhead big! Try making it just a little bit smaller than your Masthead. By doing this, you will be able to show HIERARCHY of text with smaller teasers and subheads.
Your choices should create CONSISTENCY of text formatting and color in your layout. Don't introduce another font if you already have 3; you should not have more than 3 different fonts in your magazine layout. Simple is better and easier to read.
Format text in a way that communicates HIERARCHY
Explore tracking, leading, paragraph alignment, case, etc.
Review section 7 (right side) for how to use the color picker's eyedropper to sample colors from colors that are already in your file.
Open your Magazine Cover Text document from your Google Drive
Review your Subheads and Teasers and choose at least 3 to go on your Cover
Edit any teasers that are more then 3 words (ask for help if needed)
Copy and paste teasers and subhead text into area type layers onto your Cover.psd file
Edit the case etc (as needed) for to create CONSISTENCY with your other text
Continue creating CONSISTENCY by formatting the text with the same fonts, leading, tracking , and alignment as your other text.
Communicate HIERARCHY by making them smaller than your Cover Story Title text.
