Magazine Cover by Marvelyn Barug, Spring 2019
This assignment is preparing you for the Magazine Cover assignment that we will be doing as part of the Page Layout Unit that we will be worked on next.
Name of magazine: Always at the Top
Cover Story (Main Article): The cover story article title will have the largest text (after the Magazine Title) and relate to the image on the cover.
Teasers with accompanying Teaser Subheads: Teasers are the additional article titles, The subheads give additional information about the articles. All text is sized according to importance (Hierarchy)
Negative Space: Empty looking areas like solid colors, sky etc. Usually a good areas for putting text.
Visual Balance: Symmetrical or asymmetrical. How the text and images are arranged on the cover.
Alignment (Paragraph): Right, Left, Center, or Justified
Color Scheme: Group of colors
Target audience: Who is the magazine created for? (Urban teens, retired adults, women who like fashion, etc.)
Take a photo of your completed worksheet and submit it to Google Classroom

2. Refer to the Glossary of terms in SECTION 3, if needed.

4. Magazine Topic: What is the basic topic ogf your magazine. It should not be too specific.
5. Magazine Title: This can be the same as your topic.. Again, don't be too specific. Refer to the magazine examples linked HERE to see other examples of Magazine Titles.
6. Cover Story Title: This should should go with your photo. You can google what your photo is with the word "article" included. See example right.
7. Teasers and subheads: Search for article titles on the Internet by typing in your topic and adding the word "article". Example "Architecture Article"
8. Copy and paste article titles onto your Google doc (See sample left)
9. Please do not write your own text, copy and paste from the Internet. This way we are insured that there will be no spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes. The focus is on layout, not writing. See Ms. Hooker if you need help.
10. Edit your 6 Teasers & Subheads as needed so that Teasers are short (2-3 Words)
Cover Story Title & Subhead
My photo is of an Art Deco style building on Flatbush Avenue so I Googled "Flatbush Art Deco Architecture Article". I Found the text "Telling the Art Deco Story of Flatbush - Part 1: Talk & Walking Tour of Flatbush". I changed it to "Flatbush Art Deco" for the Title and "Telling the Story Talk and Walking Tour" for the subhead.
1. Take out your worksheet from day one
2. Use your ID or MetroCard to trace out 2 vertical rectangles on the back.
3. Open your magazine photo edited file for reference
4. Lightly sketch out the basic shapes and negative space that you see
5. Open your magazine text document
6. Review what you planned for your magazine title, cover story title, and choose at least three teasers with subheads.
7. Consider the length of your words and sentences and draw rectangles and lines to represent your text on your two thumbnails. You can write words too if that works for you.
8. The Magazine Title (Masthead) should be at the top
9. Plan for Paragraph alignment
10. Review the Glossary in section 3 as needed.
11. Take a photo and upload it to the assignment posting.t & Review your cover teasers etc. with Ms. Hooker

3. Print again for a second review with Ms. Hooker

10 points --- MASTHEAD • Font choice is appropriate (no Myriad Pro) • Masthead takes up space horizontally and visually stands apart from other text • Point Type was used and text is aligned with paragraph alignment, not spaces
10 points --- COVER ART • Choice of image shows planned strategy (negative space or other) for easy to read cover teasers and teaser subheads • Cover Art includes a singular dominant well chosen image (no clip art).
10 points --- TYPE LAYERS • Paragraph Type was used and text is aligned with paragraph alignment, not spaces • Spelling and punctuation are perfect.
20 points --- FONT FORMATTING • Font choice is appropriate (no Myriad Pro) and no more than ONE DECORATIVE font • Formatting and positioning looks well thought out and consistent. • There are no more than 3 different kinds of fonts • The text is easy to read • The text doesn't looked cramped or distorted • Use of CASE is consistent • Format teasers so that they stand out more then subheads. • COMPLETE WORDS; NONE OF THE WORDS ARE BROKEN UP
