Surreal Environment 7                                Dodge, Burn & Sponge Tool

1. Lesson Goals

SWBAT:

• use the BURN tool to DARKEN areas

• use the DODGE tool to LIGHTEN areas

• use the SPONGE tool to SATURATE areas

• use advanced SELECTION techniques to CONTROL burning, dodging, and sponging

• APPLY LEARNING to SURREAL ENVIRONMENT file


2. Download and Rename File

Rename it by adding a SPACE followed by your LAST name and first name followed by the file extension

Example:

Burn Dodge Saturate Hooker Martina.psd


3. Convert Background Layer

1. DOUBLE CLICK on the BACKGROUND LAYER text in the layers pallet to convert it into a REGULAR LAYER

5. Burn Shadows in Dog

1. Select the Burn Tool (It may be hidden under the Dodge or the Sponge Tool

2. Set the Options as follows:

Brush Size.........90

Hardness...........0

Range..............Midtones

Exposure...........25

3. Click and drag with the Burn Tool over the shadows in the dog to make them darker for more contrast

6.  Dodge Highlights in Nose and Eyes

1. Select the Dodge Tool (It may be hidden under the Burn or the Sponge Tool

2. Set the Options as follows:

Brush Size..........8

Hardness............0

Range...............Shadows

Exposure............100

3. Click and drag with the Dodge Tool on the nose and eyes to create highlights. See sample left.

7. Select Dog & Saturate it

1. Use the Polygonal Lasso tool to make a marching ant selection around the dog

2. Select the SPONGE TOOL (it may be hidden under the DODGE TOOL)

3. Set the OPTONS as follows

Brush Size..........500

Hardness............0

Mode................Saturate

Flow................50

4. Click and drag with the sponge tool to saturate the colors in the dog.

Try to make it even. Undo and redo until you are happy with the results.

8. Darken the Sky & Sand with Burning

1. Use the SELECT INVERSE option in the SELECT MENU

2. Select the BURN TOOL (it may be hidden under the SPONGE TOOL)

3. Set the OPTIONS as follows

Brush Size...........900

Hardness.............0

Range................Midtones

Exposure.............25

4. Click and drag with the DODGE tool to darken the sand and the sky.
