2. Review What a Sketch is

A sketch is different than a drawing.

Drawings are carefully done (usually)

Sketches are loose and lightly done so the 

artist can easily make changes while planning

A Sketch is a plan for...

...WHAT images/text will be included

...WHERE the images/text will be on the page

...HOW big will the images/text be

The WHAT, WHERE, and the HOW of a LAYOUT

is also referred to as a COMPOSITION

3.  Sketch Out 2-4 Thumbnail Sketches

1. Take a piece of white unlined paper and fold it into 4

2. Use a pencil to plan out what you will include in your composition

3. Try and anticipate how long your lines of text will be

and draw lines/shapes to represent them.

4. Remember that you are not limited to straight horizontal lines.

Explore different options.

5. Think of your images and lines of text as shapes and

lines in a design.

Use up the space, make it balanced, think like a designer!

4.  Choose Tall or Wide File Setup

1. Review your sketch if needed. Will you need a wide or tall

file setup?

2. Load ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

3. File > New.

.

4. Name: "Multiple Choice" followed by a space,

your last name and then your first.

Example: Multiple Choice Hooker Martina


5. Enter in the appropriate information for the orientation you chose

Vertical: 

...WIDTH: 7.5 inches

...HEIGHT: 9.75 inches

or

Horizontal:

...WIDTH: 10 inches

...HEIGHT: 7.25 inches

Resolution: 300 dpi


6.Find Good Images for Making Original Art

This is not a good choice

DON'T use STYLED photographs

1. Stick to plain photographic images.

6. Find Images With Adequate Pixel Dimension

1.Open your Multiple Choice.PSD file

(The Photoshop document that you created by

following the directions above)

2. Check the image size

(Image > Image Size)

3. What is the WIDTH of your file in PIXELS?

.

4. Search for an INTERNET file with the same WIDTH in PIXELS

(Suggestion: BLUE SKY, NIGHT SKY, WATER, MARBLE)

5. Choose IMAGES, SEARCH TOOLS: LARGE

Float your mouse over the image to see the PIXEL DIMENSION.

Make sure the WIDTH is as wide as your PS Document

1.Photoshop is a BITMAP (RASTER) graphic imaging program

which means that the images are made up of pixels.

Resolution describes the quality of Bitmap/Raster image

which is measured in PIXELS/DOTS PER INCH (DPI)


Photoshop is RESOLUTION DEPENDENT which means that

the RESOLUTION (quality) of a PS image will deteriorate

(worsen) if it is SCALED UP.

The PIXEL DIMENSION of a PS image refers to its WIDTH

and the HEIGHT in PIXELS which is important because

it will determine how many pixels per inch are possible for

a desired print size.


6. Add Images to Multiple Choice File

1. Make sure you navigate from the thumbnail to the

FULL SIZE image.

2. RIGHT CLICK on it and choose COPY

.

3. OPEN your Multiple Choice PHOTOSHOP file

.

4. EDIT > PASTE

.

5. SCALE DOWN (but not too much) as needed

.

6. Continue SEARCHING for more IMAGES and add them to your

Multiple Choice .psd file


6. Creative Options for 4 Choices

Do image searches for...

Pedestals, Shelves, Frames, etc...


6. Creative Options for Environment

Find textures for the ground, sky, walls, etc and create

your own unique environment.
