1. Lesson Goals

2. Again, Delete Illustrator Settings

1. Quit Illustrator by choosing Quit from the Illustrator Program Menu or by Right-Clicking on the Illustrator icon on your Dock.

2. Hold down 3 Keys with one hand:

4. Check File > Recent Documents.  If it's grayed out you did it right


3. Again, Reset Workspace

1. Window > Workspace > Reset Essentials

4. Scale the White Circle 210%

Draw a 1.24" diameter Circle if you don't have ot from the previous lesson

1. Select the copied circle that you previously placed near the red object. 


If you need to draw it again with the Ellipse Tool and make it 1.24" in diameter

2. Choose Object > Arrange > Bring To Front.

3.  Zoom into the white circle. 

4. With the Selection tool, select the white circle, if it’s not already selected.

5. Double-click the Scale tool  in the Tools panel to open the Scale dialog box. In the Scale dialog box, change Uniform Scale to 210% and then click OK.

5. Option Click Shortcut for Type on a Path

Type "The Common Cold" once you have converted the circle into a closed text path.

1. Position the with circle centered on top of the red object.

2. . Select the Type tool but do not  click! Position the pointer over the edge of the white circle and observe how the curser changes to an Area Type curser.  Don't click!


The Type cursor changes to a Type cursor with a circle. This indicates that, if you click (don’t click,) text will be placed inside of the circle, creating a type area.

3. Press Option and position the curser over the left side of the circle (see the figure for location). The Type on a Path curser appears (the curser with an intersecting wavy path).

4. Click, but don’t type. The cursor is now on the path.

5. Type THE COMMON COLD (all uppercase). The text flows on the circular path.

6. Format the Type to "Normal Paragraph Style"

1. Click three times to select the text.

2. In the Control panel, change the font size to 15 pt, the font to Myriad Pro (if not already selected), the font style to Bold Condensed or something similar, and the Fill color to a light gray (C=1 M=1 Y=13 K=15).


7. Adjust Text Placement on the Path

1. To adjust the placement on the path, switch to the Selection tool. Position the pointer over the line on the left end of the text (to the left of the word “THE”).

2. That line is called a bracket. When you see the cursor with the arrow pointing left, drag up around the circle a bit. See the figure for position.


Brackets appear at the beginning of the type, at the end of the path, and at the midpoint between the start and end brackets. All of these brackets can be adjusted to reposition the text in the path.

8. Type on a Path Options

1. With the path type object selected with the Selection tool, choose Type > Type On A Path > Type On A Path Options.

In the Type On A Path Options dialog box, choose Descender from the Align To Path menu, and change the Spacing to -12 pt. Click OK.
