Color Page Project Goals

• The COLOR PAGE project is an INTRODUCTION to basic COLOR THEORY that covers common COLOR SCHEMES used by PROFESSIONAL artists.

• Students will use ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR to CREATE their own COLOR WHEELS and VALUE SCALE illustrations.

• Students will CREATE their own COLOR SCHEME illustrations that show CONTRAST & UNITY of VALUE & COLOR.

• Students will LAYOUT their ILLUSTRATIONS with TEXT using the best practices of PROFESSIONAL GRAPHIC DESIGNERS

2. Lesson Goals

SWBAT:

1..REVIEW the basic GOALS of the COLOR PAGE project

2..Draw a RADIAL SYMMETRY design with 12 intricate and symmetrical Pathfinder SHAPES and fill with correct COLOR WHEEL colors

3...Create three unique shapes, each one representing one of the three color wheel groups.

3. Create Your Color Page File

1. Load AI (Click on the orange AI icon on your dock to load ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR)

2. File > New (Go to the FILE MENU and choose NEW) Choose:

• TALL for orientation

• LETTER for size

• CMYK for color mode

• INCHES for units

3. Name your file, Color Page followed by your last name and then your first name

Example: Color Page Hooker Martina.ai

4. Save it onto your DESKTOP

4. Set Up Your Panels

1. Hit the TAB key to close your tool box and all your palettes. In step 2 you will reopen just what you need for today's lesson

2. Now open what you'll need for today from the

WINDOW MENU

Window > Tools, Window > Control, Window > Align, Window > Pathfinder, 

3. Check your neighbor to see that he/she has done it correctly

5.   Intricate Symmetry - Strategy 1

1. Start with any 3 straight and symmetrical shapes

The problem with crooked shapes is that they are not symmetrical

2. Position them so that they overlap and stacked on a vertical

3. Open the Align Palette

4. Select the 3 shapes

5. Choose ALIGN CENTER in the Align Palette


6. Select the three shapes

7. Pathfinder: Unite/Minus Front

Another word for INTRICATE is DETAILED


6. Intricate Shape Strategy 2

1. Select the Asymmetrical shape or create a new one

2. Click and hold on the rotate tool to reveal the reflect tool

3. Double click on the reflect tool to open its options

4. Choose Vertical, 90 degrees, and Copy

5. Pathfinder > Combine the two shapes into one

7.  Create at least 3 Different Shapes

1. The 1st shape will be for your 3 Primary Colors

2. The 2nd shape will be for your 3 Secondary colors

3. The 3rd shape will be for your 6 Tertiary colors

8. Extension/Modification

1. TOO HARD?  Use a combination of simple and intricate shapes

2. NEED to CATCH UP QUICK? Try just 1 symmetrical shape so you can move ahead to next lesson on time.

9. Copy, Rotate, & Position 3 Primary Color Shapes

1. Open your AI Skills 4 and follow steps 5 - 7

2. Positioning shapes correctly is easy if you think of a clock

• The 1st shape is at 12 o'clock

• The 2nd shape rotates 120 degrees counter clockwise to 8 o'clock

•The 3rd shape rotates 120 degrees counter clockwise to 4 o'clock


10.  Copy, Rotate, & Position 3 Secondary Color Shapes

1. This time position your first shape ate the bottom at 6 o'clock

2. Position the shapes correctly again by thinking of a clock

• The 1st shape is at 6 o'clock

• The 2nd shape rotates 120 degrees counter clockwise to 2 o'clock

 • The 3rd shape rotates 120 degrees counter clockwise to 10 o'clock

11.  Copy, Rotate, & Position 6 Tertiary Color Shapes

1. Position your Tertiary color shape at 11 o'clock and use the rotate tool to rotate (without copying) exactly 30 degrees.

2. Now use the rotate tool to copy and rotate it 60 degrees and position the copies in-between the primary and secondary color shapes.  

3. Review that you have 6 tertiary color shapes correctly positioned.

12. Copy & Paste Color Wheel

1. Right-Click on the color wheel shown below

2. Choose COPY from the drop down menu

3. Edit > Copy onto your color page

13. Add Color

1. Use the Eye-Dropper tool to pull the colors into your color wheel.


14. Assessment

15 Open Google Drive Submit Folder & Submit

1. Save your work before you hand it in!

2. Click on the Submit Folder Link for your class below
