My mother is important to me. She does many things for me. I have a harder life without her. I am greateful (sic) to have such a wonderful mom.

My mom takes good care of me. She takes me to the doctor and dentist. She protects me. She makes delicious food for me. She cleans. When I get hurt, she makes me feel better.

I like spending time with my mom. I like to go out for sushi with her. At home, we snuggle, read, do homework and even share things. I like it when she teaches me something new.

The most important thing about my mom is that she loves me and understands me. I am so greateful (sic) to have a wonderful mom.

For my mom, Maria who in my childhood by Ryan Millares

On the day of the Pharaohs

Metaphors by Ryan, 9

During the summer, Ryan works on academic workbooks so he won't spend the days watching TV and playing video games. This summer, I bought Summer Bridge Activities for 5th Grade (incoming). It's organized by day.. including math, language, writing, science and social studies. Last friday, he worked on metaphors and I would like to share his answers:

1. Sleep is a vacation; you can go anywhere in your dreams.

2. Life is a battery; dying.. one day.

3. Anger is like time, you can't control it.

4. Happiness is a lollipop; it is so sweet.

5. Friendship is glue; binding people together.

She made me this

A shift out of bed sheets

And a collar of gold and silver

At school we played marbles

And had a plentiful feast

That filled our bellies

When I struggle with numbers

Dates in history

Elements in the Periodic Table

And even sentences in essays

She was there for me

And showed me the way

When learning to ride a bike

She taught me to

Master my balance

Overcome my fears

And if I fall

To get up again

And again and again

Who introduced me to Chess

With rooks and knights

And kings and queens

And now I know

The Queen’s Gambit

The Four Knights’ Defense

And the secret of

The Four-Move Checkmate

Who loved to tell me stories

Of her childhood

Stories that made me laugh

When I hear her own history

And stories that made me wonder

If I did that

When I was a baby

Who spends time with me

Watching Jeopardy

Playing Angry Birds

Swimming in the pool

And playing Chicken Invaders

Who feeds us

And cleans the house

Who pays for the house

And for extra activities

Who keeps us safe

Plans family vacations

Helps me adjust to

New schools

Who always loves us

My role model by Ryan Millares (9 yrs old)

I admire many people but the person I admire most is my Dad. My Dad has many strengths. He's a really good tennis player because he has played it for a really long time and teaches me how to play. He's a really good biker because he rode my bike through my whole bumpy backyard. He's also a good exerciser, because he uses a weight bench and dumbells. Sometimes, he is even sweating.

Dad has a good personality. He's smart because he knows a lot about science. He's funny because he knows a lot of crazy jokes. And he's nice because he takes me to arcades and lets me watch TV. He's also very generous.

My dad has lots of hobbies and jobs, so he's really busy. He has his own business and he leaves the house early in the morning. He is a good computer worker because when mom cooks and Jack and I play upstairs, Dad is on the computer. And he's also a good driver. He has a license and he drives almost every day. And that is why I think Dad is an excellent role model.

** Ryan wrote this for his dad's valentine's day card this year. I have to share it because it's so sweet and so wonderful.Dad and Ryan (2 yrs old)Dad and Ryan (2 yrs old)

Mother to Son.. Shared Wisdom from the Heart by M.Harrison and H.Harrison Jr.

Some really cute but important pearls of wisdom from the book:

Realize that your son will love you more intensely than anyone or anything in the world.

Introduce him to crayons and paint. But keep an eye on him or he'll redecorate your home.

Right around the age of three, he will heroically start to think he is your protector. This never goes away.

Expect roughhousing. It's loud, but it's normal.

Instead of trying to control his behavior, learn to gently shape it.

Don't tolerate meanness.

Keep kissing him goodnight. Even if he doesn't kiss back.

Every now and then go into his room, sit down, and just visit.

Don't miss his school plays. Even if his role is "Tree #2."

Gently remind him that anything he finds in his nose should, for the good of society, stay there.

Remember these words, It's just a phase.

If I can invite anybody for Thanksgiving Dinner, I would invite... by Ryan M

I loved reading this essay that Ryan wrote for his Writing class. The only thing is the teacher accidentally told Ryan that Santa doesn't exist!!!!! I don't know how old kids should be when they stop believing in Santa but Ryan still believed until this essay came out. We've always made it more magical with Santa (Ryan writing his letter to Santa, preparing cookies and milk for him and carrots for the reindeers). When he submitted this essay, the teacher said he can't select Santa because he doesn't exist (!!!!!). Ryan told Mrs. McCurdy if Santa wasn't real, then who leaves all the gifts for him and his brother when everybody is asleep in our house. So after thinking about it, the teacher let him submit his work.

If I can invite anyone for Thanksgiving dinner, I would invite Santa Claus. I chose him because he's generous, since he gives gifts to all kids, rich or poor. He's also funny because he's always laughing. He's also a happy person since he always has smile for everybody. He's also magical because he fits in every chimney and can travel around the world in one night. He's even powerful, since he can make the reindeers fly, know who's good or bad and know exactly what you want.

I would serve him traditional turkey because there's no turkey in the north pole. I would also serve him apple and pumpkin pie, apple cider, green beans, and brocolli, since he's probably tired of milk and cookies. If I could discuss anything with him, I will ask a lot of questions. I'll ask him how he gets his gifts, where he lives, how he makes the reindeers fly, and how he gives the gifts to all the kids all over the world in one night. In order to make his stay worthwhile, my family would give him gifts. I would also play board games with him, with the games he gave me. These are what I will do with Santa Claus and why I would invite him to my house.

An ode to a turkey by Ryan Millares.

An ode to a turkey

Oh dear turkey

your body's very plump.

But when it comes to Thanksgiving feast,

you're like a tasy bump.

I know you want to live..

and that you don't want to die.

But turkey's quite expensive,

too much money for us to buy.

Thanksgiving's coming quickly,

and the feast can not be late.

I'm sorry but I have no choice,

so this Thanksgiving, you're on my plate.
