Dear St. Rita Families,
I hope this newsletter finds your families well. We have a number of events planned this month, and have had a few days off of school as the staff had professional development. During this professional development time, some of our staff dove into new literacy resources to help us reach our young readers. Teachers also spent time last week learning about teaching strategies for math and English Language learners. I am excited to be part of our initiatives to improve instruction!
This week we had a visit by the Caledonia fire department, who talked to us about fire safety. Our K4-5th grade students had a chance to practice “stop, drop, and roll,” as well as what to do in case of a fire. We all got to see the firetruck and explore the firefighters’ equipment. Some of these adventures were shared on our facebook page this week. There are also pictures in this newsletter from our middle school trip to SCJohnson this week.
The Catholic Schools Walk scheduled for this Saturday will be held NEXT Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rita’s because of forecasted rain for this weekend. We plan to walk through the neighborhood but will move inside St. Rita's if it is raining. More communication will come out about this soon. This is our parent association’s major fundraiser for the year, and it enables us to provide enrichment opportunities throughout the year for our students. Our team captain, Hilary Lowman, has done a tremendous job soliciting business sponsors for this event! The money wars event associated with the walk raised $1968.61 this month! Our winners were the second grade class with $388.27, followed by the K5 class with $303.04, and the third grade class in third place with $279.86.
Dojo announcements went out about volleyball games this weekend and supervision - please see the announcements for details on times and places. Volunteers are still needed to help with concessions.
The 8th grade class is very excitedly working on plans for the Halloween carnival at the end of this month. They are planning games, a bounce house, a scary maze, and more! The carnival is planned for the 27th from 5-8 p.m. here at St. Rita. We will send more information next week.
The last item I’d like to mention this week is clothing! The weather has quickly changed and we need to dress appropriately. Students go outside several times a day for recess, and the fresh air and exercise is good for them. Please make sure your children have tights or long pants and a jacket so they are comfortable participating in outdoor activities in chilly weather. Please note that hoodies are considered spirit wear and should be reserved for spirit wear days or OOU days.
Thank you all for the support you’ve given our students through our fundraising and extra-curricular activities this fall! Our teachers are also asking for your help reinforcing homework and academics - please follow your child’s classroom on class dojo so you can continue to receive updates from your child’s teacher. We appreciate your partnership to bring the best education and opportunities to our students. Feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns.
Blessings,
Beth Woodward

"Building Thinking Classrooms... exudes enthusiasm for students, how they think, and how those thoughts coalesce into powerful thinking classrooms."
That's what we are trying to build in our classrooms, POWERFUL THINKERS! In 8th grade science, we use these concepts to construct the details of a conclusion in an experiment. In math, we use these concepts to help students think "outside the box" and find answers in various ways. Siena has brought in CESA 6 to help us foster this concept and build a POWERFUL THINKING CLASSROOM within our middle school math programs.
On Monday, October 9, SCJ invited Middle Schools to attend the Kaleidoscope Education Series Program at the Golden Rondelle.
This particular day focused on the exciting world of physics. St. Rita's 8th grader, Arlette Billman-Font, was one of the students chosen to demonstrate how electrons flow through objects....in this case...causing her hair to rise!
Thank you to Michelle Sweetman and SCJ for continued funding and making these experiences accessible to our students.
Don't miss out. Register today for any of the safe environment classes being done at our schools.

The St. Rita Dinner Club is a great way to meet new people from church and school while also getting better acquainted with those you already know.
12-14 adults are grouped together and dine out at various medium-priced restaurants. There are group leaders who will coordinate and communicate the dates of the gatherings once a month. Our first dinner gathering will be in October.
This is a very flexible club…just come when you can!
