Greetings,
We jumped right into March and still have so much more learning to go. Make sure you scroll through all of the pictures in this newsletter. The student pictures demonstrate the great teaching and learning happening throughout the school. Students are very busy in their classrooms as well as after school activities/Clubs and our recent field trips.
We are looking forward to the class level Spelling Bee on Monday, March 6. A big shout out to everyone studying this weekend. The second round is school wide on March 13 and the final round is at St. Catherine’s High School on March 22. We will update when we know who moves on to represent St. Rita's. Please encourage your child(ren) to study this weekend.
Our State Wide Student Assessment/Forward Exam is forthcoming on March 20. What is the Forward Exam? “During the 2015-16 school year, Wisconsin rolled out a new assessment called the Wisconsin Forward Exam. The Exam is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. These standards outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be college and career ready. The Forward Exam is administered online in the spring of each school year at:
Grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics,
Grades 4 and 8 in Science and,
Grades 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies.
The Forward Exam is a high quality, research-based, and affordable online assessment that meets Wisconsin’s expectations. It is a customized assessment with innovative item types that includes test items reviewed and approved by Wisconsin educators.
We are asking each family in grades 3-8 to write a note of encouragement for the start of the assessment. Please see the section noted in this newsletter for more details.
Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint of Ireland and its national apostle. Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people. In the centuries following Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture: Perhaps the most well-known legend of St. Patrick is that he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock. Carnation Sales in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day! St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.
We will have an OOU Day in honor of St. Patrick on March 15 (details forthcoming). As a reminder, there is no school for students on March 16 and 17.
Still wondering what Lent is about?

In closing, Pope Francis shared at his homily on Ash Wednesday during Mass, “The imposition of ashes at the beginning of Lent reminds people to "return to the truth about ourselves," which is that "the Lord alone is God, and we are the work of his hands.”
Blessings,
Dr. Sue

Diving Response for Stress Reduction
Submerger your face in cold water for a few seconds (or splash your face). Your heart rate will slow down, helping your body to calm down. You will take slower, deeper breaths, also helping your body to calm down. An added benefit is that the cold water will close your pores and promote a healthy complexion.
Hello St. Rita Families,
We have had so many exciting events in the last few months since our last official SRS newsletter. Our students all crafted and presented their Faith Fair Projects. They all turned out fantastic. It was great to see the creativity in the individual projects using Legos to Peeps, from shoe box dioramas to mobiles, and from clay to handmade instruments. Our theme was How We Praise God.
We have reached an exciting benchmark in our IXL program. Our students have answered over 50,000 questions for ELA and Math! A pizza party is being planned. Also, all first grade students were all given Usernames and Passwords to get them online with IXL at home. We are piloting a program for each student to do 10 minutes of ELA and Math each weeknight. Please make sure to get your kiddos online. This program adjusts itself to their individualized learning.
In Math, we are endeavoring to add 3 numbers in one equation. In Science, we did an experiment with Conversation Hearts. We set up 3 different cups with different liquids: water, vinegar and club soda. Students recorded their observations for 24 hours. Some hearts melted, others floated and some sank to the bottom. In ELA, we are focusing on our Guided Reading groups and Superkids reading programs. In Blessed, our religious education program, we will start learning about Baptism.
It was really nice to see all the St. Rita families at our VIP Mass. Thank your for coming!
Take care and God bless you all,
Mrs. Bach
Hello St. Rita Families!
During the month of March in music classes
Middle school students will be using electronic keyboards to learn simple melodies and chords, and will continue learning about form and musical styles.
Elementary school students will be singing and signing melodic patterns that use the first five notes of the major scale. (do-re-mi-fa-sol)
All grade levels will continue to practice rhythm patterns that include quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets, and sixteenth notes.
All grade levels are working on standard #2, “Perform music, alone or with others, with expression, technical accuracy, and appropriate interpretation.” And also working on standard #4 “Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between music and the other subject areas…”
If you have any questions, please let me know via email or Class Dojo!

In rainy or subzero weather, students need appropriate outerwear. Students are outdoors several times a day. A hooded sweatshirt for example is not as adequate as a winter jacket. If the outdoor temperature is 10 degrees or below, wind chill factor of “zero” degrees or below, hard rain or blizzard like conditions, recess is most likely to be indoors. The decision is up to the Principal and at times in collaboration with supervisory staff. While outside, if any playground supervisor determines that the weather is too severe for outdoor recess (as our weather changes often), the outdoor supervisor is authorized to bring the students inside.
As we approach the cooler weather, we know in WI things can change quickly, in the event RUSD closes schools for weather, Siena follows suit. No one with the possible exception of maintenance is expected to report to work. Staff will receive an all users communication from Siena/Ms. Kimberly Gardner.
Current Handbook Language we will follow:
The school will be closed including CARES supervision, on days when Racine Unified School District is closed. Closings are announced over local radio (WISN 1130, WTMJ 620 / 94.5, WRJN 1400), television (FOX 6, TMJ4, CBS58, WISN 12), and their media websites. Parents will not hear our school name announced on public media unless there are specific circumstances affecting only our school or only all Catholic schools.
School closings will be announced in the media as Siena Catholic Schools of Racine. Staff will receive an email from Ms. Kimberly Gardner. Rarely used, but if a delayed start is announced for Racine Unified School District, St. Rita will follow the same schedule and delay the start to the day.
Parents may use their own discretion to decide whether to keep their children at home for safety. This absence will be recorded as an excused absence.
