Dear Parents/Guardians,
November is a short month with no school on Nov. 23, 24 and 25 for our Thanksgiving Break. We have much to be thankful for! Everyday is a blessing and thanking God for all the goodness he offers, brings us closer to HIM.
This month we also give thanks for our Veterans. November 11 is Veterans Day, a federal holiday that is meant to honor all veterans of the uniformed services who served or are still serving during times of peace; as well as war. A shout out to Ms. Bach’s first graders and a few other classes for writing thank you cards to our Veterans. The cards will be picked up by Commander Brekenridge. The cards will be delivered to the VFW and reach Veterans homes in Racine. KUDOS students and staff-sharing our gratitude for their service is wonderful.
A huge shout out to our 3K learners for their Community Service Project. They are collecting adult socks for the guests at St. Monica’s. Feel free to send in a pair with your child. We have a sock drop off box in the main office.
Check out Ms. Maraccini and Mr. Ropiak! They both attended the Math Hoops Program and are bringing back some fabulous learning experiences to our children. Very proud and honored to note the continued learning by Ms. Maraccini and Ms. Ropiak.
We are truly grateful for Father Michael's continued presence in St. Rita's school. He visited our first and fifth graders. We love to see him in our school. Moreover, he will join us in December, sharing the birth of Jesus. We love hearing and learning about our Catholic Faith!
There are so many wonderful teaching and learning opportunities happening, it is hard to capture it all. Please continue to check out the weekly newsletter, FB and teacher Class DOJO’s. Share with friends and family!
Sincerely,
Dr. Sue

Take Breaks
Your brain, not unlike your body, needs rest to work at its’ optimal level. You will also retain more information if you work/study in several short sessions versus pulling an “all nighter." Breaks can include a snack, texting a friend or playing with your dog.
I am Ms.Terrie, the new teacher in 3K. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2005. Shortly after graduating I married my high school sweetheart, Scott Zondag. We moved around the midwest starting in Illinois, a small stint in Minnesota, followed by us landing here in Wisconsin, back where I started. We have 5 children, Temperance 15, Jeffrey 14, Thomas 14, Cadence 10, and Zachary 6. They are the reason I was a housewife for 14 years with an in-home daycare for the last five of that. When my youngest son finally aged into school It was time for me to look outside the home. Regardless, I still spend much of my time working at home. Laundry and dishes are never done.
I joined the 4K classroom as an aide last year, and was a little leary of jumping headfirst into the deep end after being out of the workforce for so long. After getting my feet wet, I decided to become the 3K teacher when the position was opened. It has been a wonderful experience. The children are growing and blossoming, and are still amazed even by the simplest things. Teaching Religion is one of the best parts of our day because to most, these lessons are brand new. Possibly the first time they have heard them. To see the joy and wonder is absolutely a blessing. I also love using my crafty creative side so art is the other pastime we enjoy as a class. Watching these kids accomplish great things and little things brings me great joy.
4K students are taking care of beanie baby dogs, cats, and chameleons. We even have a vet on site. We love watching their imaginations!
The science table has a Jack-O-Lantern (Pumpkin Jack) in a sealed see-through container. We are watching what is happening to it each day.
Or, some friends prefer to check out the shaving cream in the sensory table.
The fancy scissors seem to be popular this week too!
The topic for this month is Thanksgiving and the many blessings that God has given us in our lives. Families have decorated cornucopias to share the blessings in their lives! Happy Thanksgiving!
6th Grade ELA-Sixth graders are learning about yellow fever and the researchers and doctors who investigated to find out what caused it. Soon they will be starting to read stories about Sherlock Holmes.
7th Grade ELA-Seventh graders just finished reading Red Scarf Girl about the life of a young girl during the cultural revolution of China. They had fun acting out scenes from the book. Next, they are taking on reading the play, A Raisin in the Sun.
8th Grade ELA-Eighth graders are learning about the life of Frederick Douglass. They have been interested in the unit and also were able to listen to a dramatic reading of the text.
All middle school students are participating in Novel November. They are individually writing a novel during class time. Every day we end class by discussing our writing with classmates, writing for 15-20 minutes, and then sharing their favorite lines or excerpts that they’ve written.
I can't wait to read the final products. I’m certain there are some author’s in our midst.
The 8th grade class is excited to bring the Giving Tree to our school this year. You can brighten the holidays for a child in need by choosing an item off the sign up genius. We are working with a Milwaukee area Catholic school to provide gifts to 50 students in need. Please choose from one or more items from sign up genius and return the unwrapped gift by November 30! Eighth graders will wrap the gifts and arrange to deliver them. Thank you for your generosity.
On November 15, students are required to wear long pants or if skirts, jumpers are worn they must have white, navy, or black leggings or tights underneath. Sweatpants are not allowed during the school day under uniforms, but are allowed when going outside during recess time. We are outside several times a day and the weather is turning cooler! We kindly ask everyone to pack away their shorts starting November 15. Please remember to bring outside outer wear as well. We appreciate the cooperation!

Each Friday students may dress in their Spirit Wear!
Students are still required to wear their uniform bottoms-(pants, skirts, jumpers etc.) but may wear any of their (new or older style) Spirit Wear tops to school.
In rainy or subzero weather, students need appropriate outerwear. Students are outdoors several times a day. A hooded sweatshirt for example is not as adequate as a winter jacket. If the outdoor temperature is 10 degrees or below, wind chill factor of “zero” degrees or below, hard rain or blizzard like conditions, recess is most likely to be indoors. The decision is up to the Principal and at times in collaboration with supervisory staff. While outside, if any playground supervisor determines that the weather is too severe for outdoor recess (as our weather changes often), the outdoor supervisor is authorized to bring the students inside.
As we approach the cooler weather, we know in WI things can change quickly, in the event RUSD closes schools for weather, Siena follows suit. No one with the possible exception of maintenance is expected to report to work. Staff will receive an all users communication from Siena/Ms. Kimberly Gardner.
Current Handbook Language we will follow:
The school will be closed including CARES supervision, on days when Racine Unified School District is closed. Closings are announced over local radio (WISN 1130, WTMJ 620 / 94.5, WRJN 1400), television (FOX 6, TMJ4, CBS58, WISN 12), and their media websites. Parents will not hear our school name announced on public media unless there are specific circumstances affecting only our school or only all Catholic schools.
School closings will be announced in the media as Siena Catholic Schools of Racine. Staff will receive an email from Ms. Kimberly Gardner. Rarely used, but if a delayed start is announced for Racine Unified School District, St. Rita will follow the same schedule and delay the start to the day.
Parents may use their own discretion to decide whether to keep their children at home for safety. This absence will be recorded as an excused absence.
Children's Liturgy of the Word
At the 10:30 Mass this weekend, children up to 5th grade are welcome to attend Children's Liturgy of the Word to hear the readings and discuss them with a child-centered focus.
During the closing song, the children are invited to come sing along and accompany the choir with egg shakers.
