Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Winners! We know you will do well at the Siena Spelling Bee. Keep practicing and Good Luck.
All the signs of Lent are drawing nearer and nearer to one of our most holiest seasons-EASTER. However, we are still in a solemn period centered on prayer, fasting and almsgiving. There is no better time to reconnect or deepen one's faith than Lent. Many blessings to you and your family during this time.
It is also a great reminder to be grateful for all that we have and to pray and remember all those suffering from many afflictions whether at home or aboard. Please keep our St. Rita's community and our country in your thoughts and prayers.
We are moving into our Grade 3-8 State wide testing window known as the Forward Exam on Monday. Ms. Folker, our Learning Support Coordinator has been working very hard on creating a schedule and ensuring all of the requirements are met for this State Wide Exam. A message has been sent about writing a note of encouragement to your child. They love notes from you! This will help motivate them to do well knowing that you expect them to demonstrate their learning and are accountable to you, their teachers and themselves. We have snacks as some of the assessments are long. You may send in a snack for your child if you prefer your own snack(s).
Praying no more school closings, we would jus like to remind everyone that our morning bell rings at 8AM. We expect students to be in their seats at 8:10AM. We will be monitoring attendance closely these last two quarters. A violation of Siena's attendance and summer school policy may result in your child(ren) attending mandatory summer school.
Enjoy this week's newsletter and the many smiles and activities we are sharing with you.
Blessings,
Dr. Sue

Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Happy Spring! So, what has 3rd grade been up to?
In Reading, we are currently studying Ancient Rome, and Roman mythology. Wrapping up the quarter with everyone’s favorite thing to do in Math is Word Problems! We have been building perseverance, word clue skills as well as checking our answers for reasonableness.
During Lent, we join 4th and 5th grade in Stations of the Cross every Friday. We even made our own bulletin board depicting the different Stations of the Cross and what they each mean.
Explorers, and how America grew is what we have been learning about in Social Studies. Each student researched an Explorer and made an Explorer Wanted poster on Google Docs.
In our Life Cycle Unit in Science we are currently learning about different animal adaptations such as bird beaks.
Other enriching activities include building up our reading stamina during RAP time (Read Any Place) in the room. We are close to 30 minutes of sustained reading! IXL is another class favorite! 20,000 questions have been answered as we try to build proficiency in various ELA and Math skills.
Hello St Rita Families!
Thank you for your participation and all of your donations raised for the Kids Heart Challenge! The event was a huge success to aid in the fight against heart disease and stroke! The kids enjoyed learning about and discussing fun heart facts from a video that we watched during class while discussing nutrition and healthy foods for our bodies. We also played a special tag game called veggie fruit tag along with some special Valentine’s Day themed activities such as a cupid shuffle workout and finding cupid!
Our volleyball unit has also just wrapped up. 5th through 8th graders enjoyed playing some highly competitive games while 3rd and 4th graders enjoyed practicing basic fundamentals of bumping and setting while playing modified versions of games utilizing a beach ball. 1st and 2nd grade also had fun keeping the ball up until it made it over the net.
K-3, K-4 and K-5 have been staying busy working on their underhand and overhand throwing and catching using a yarn ball.
Have a great month and stay active!
Mr. Schwaiger
It’s time for March Madness. The middle school ELA classes have been reading poems and narrowing it down to our favorite one! The students are also beginning to write their own poems modeled after Kobe Bryant’s poem, “Dear Basketball.”
Eighth graders have been reading the graphic novel, Frankenstein. As soon as they finish their essay, they will be moving on to Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet.
Seventh graders have been learning about the way the brain works, and reading articles about interesting cases of brain injury cases. Next they will be moving on to Edgar Allen Poe’s poems.
Sixth graders have been reading articles and learning about the history of chocolate and the many ways it’s been used and produced over the years. They are starting a unit about Greek Mythology starting with a webquest.
As always, the middle school students are choosing their own books from the library or the classroom library to read during independent reading time. It’s been awesome to hear students beg for extra reading time lately!
WOW! DRUM ROLL...Your generosity helped raised $6,878.15 during our American Kids Heart Challenge!

General Football information
The Football Program operates under the overall RYS philosophy of “Giving Kids a Sporting Chance”. The objectives of this program are to develop the physical and mental well being of the individual, to increase self-confidence and self-respect, and to encourage leadership development. We wish to develop better citizens through team play and sportsmanship-like competition. Provide a quality physical education program, allow every youth player to participate, and develop their skills to the extent they desire. We teach a positive attitude toward competition and discourage the “win at all costs” attitude. The goal is to teach each player that they are a winner if they give their best effort-regardless of the score.
Youth football teaches kids important life skills:
*How to finish something you start.
*How to be accountable
*How to be disciplined
*The value of Goal setting
*Teamwork and leadership
*How to be selfless.
*That there are no shortcuts.
*How to stand for something.
*How to accomplish something bigger than oneself
WHY RYS FOOTBALL?
4 professional WIAA officials per field
Home games at a Turf stadium
Athletic trainers on site
USA Football certified coaches
Tutelage from the high school coaches
In rainy or subzero weather, students need appropriate outerwear. Students are outdoors several times a day. A hooded sweatshirt for example is not as adequate as a winter jacket. If the outdoor temperature is 10 degrees or below, wind chill factor of “zero” degrees or below, hard rain or blizzard like conditions, recess is most likely to be indoors. The decision is up to the Principal and at times in collaboration with supervisory staff. While outside, if any playground supervisor determines that the weather is too severe for outdoor recess (as our weather changes often), the outdoor supervisor is authorized to bring the students inside.
As we approach the cooler weather, we know in WI things can change quickly, in the event RUSD closes schools for weather, Siena follows suit. No one with the possible exception of maintenance is expected to report to work. Staff will receive an all users communication from Siena/Ms. Kimberly Gardner.
Current Handbook Language we will follow:
The school will be closed including CARES supervision, on days when Racine Unified School District is closed. Closings are announced over local radio (WISN 1130, WTMJ 620 / 94.5, WRJN 1400), television (FOX 6, TMJ4, CBS58, WISN 12), and their media websites. Parents will not hear our school name announced on public media unless there are specific circumstances affecting only our school or only all Catholic schools.
School closings will be announced in the media as Siena Catholic Schools of Racine. Staff will receive an email from Ms. Kimberly Gardner. Rarely used, but if a delayed start is announced for Racine Unified School District, St. Rita will follow the same schedule and delay the start to the day.
Parents may use their own discretion to decide whether to keep their children at home for safety. This absence will be recorded as an excused absence.
Safe Environment: How to sign up: Instructions.
