We are winding down February but looking forward to an awesome March. Perhaps, warmer weather on the way. We can only be so hopeful.
The Lenten Season began this past Wednesday, Ash Wednesday. Unfortunately, we were unable to hear Deacon Greg speak to us regarding the “Meaning of Ash Wednesday.” Perhaps another time. I do hope you take time to reflect during this Lenten Season and continue to find ways to pray-bringing you and your family closer to God. We will be doing this starting March 7. We will be going to the church by grade levels to engage and recite the Stations of the Cross. This is a great way to immerse oneself in prayer to Jesus by following Him through the stations to Calvary.
We are excited to share that Siena is running a 1-8th grade spelling bee on March 22. By now, all families were sent the study list on February 22. Every student will participate in their classroom bee on March 6 and the top three will move to the school-wide bee on March 13. Please note that words within each band will be given randomly. The top three plus an alternate (in the event one of the top three students are unable to attend) will move on to the District Spelling Bee. The classroom teacher will select an appropriate time that fits in their schedule. Participants are welcome to invite guests to the final spelling bee competition at St. Catherine’s.
We have seen an increase in family members attending Mass during our VIP Mass Days! Keep it up. The students love sitting with your or relatives. You can see how proud they are of their family.
Blessings,
Dr. Sue

Living Loving and Learning Our Faith: Living as members of our Catholic Faith Community; Loving God and all of His creation; Learning for our future on Earth and Heaven.
Everyone experiences anxiety, but how you manage it makes a difference. No one is too young to feel anxious or too young to manage it. Try this: While drawing the number 8 on your knee with your finger, breath in on the upward stroke and exhale slowly on the downstroke. You have just increased the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream, delivered to the problem solving part of your brain.
We just finished coming off of the faith fair where our projects were churches. They were amazing! Learning about churches and combining that with the word temple helped lead us into our bible lesson of the boy Jesus in the temple. Then we are going to learn about Jesus' baptism and head into Lent. Which can be a hard concept for a 3/4 year old.
With our new religion theme it will be all about the 5 senses in our classroom this week. You may hear, see, smell, us popping popcorn. They are very excited to pop a special snack.
We will also be painting with kool-aid bubble paint and using our senses with that project. In scholastic it is all about teeth. They are learning about good cleaning habits. It is always an adventure in 3K.
Our 4K favorite center this past month has been making valentines for each other. We love using colored paper, heart shapes, scissors, glue, paper doilies and writing words.
Other centers we could choose were the Pet Shop to take care of Beanie Baby animals in family life, beauty shop with velcro curlers, large tool workshop floor puzzle, shaking a die and counting heart erasers, and playing learning games on the Clever Touch to name a few.
We are continuing to work on using writing tools to print letters and numbers, and listen to our Happily Ever After story: The Nightingale from ancient China.
The weather has been warmer than normal, so we have had an extra recess every day to practice our galloping, skipping, hopping, and jumping.
To end our day, we have been learning and reciting the Lord’s Prayer.
Kindergarten finished up the first section in our Superkids Reading Series.
The first section was “Meet the Superkids” and now that we have met all the Superkid characters, the second section is called “The Superkids’ Club." We loved all of the wonderful Faith Fair Projects and utilize our Prayer corner daily.
Students in grades 6 and 7th had waited for several years due to COVID for this field trip. They were able to take a tour and meet a Senator such as Van Wanggaard and Representative Robert (Bob) Wittke. Mr. Wittke is the Representative for Caledonia and Northern Racine County. Each student recevied a Wisconsin Blue Book as well.
We miss you already!
The 8th grade girls and boys were invited to play at the 2023 Padre Serra Basketball tournament
We will update with the date as soon as we have it.
Can you find your water bottle?

In rainy or subzero weather, students need appropriate outerwear. Students are outdoors several times a day. A hooded sweatshirt for example is not as adequate as a winter jacket. If the outdoor temperature is 10 degrees or below, wind chill factor of “zero” degrees or below, hard rain or blizzard like conditions, recess is most likely to be indoors. The decision is up to the Principal and at times in collaboration with supervisory staff. While outside, if any playground supervisor determines that the weather is too severe for outdoor recess (as our weather changes often), the outdoor supervisor is authorized to bring the students inside.
As we approach the cooler weather, we know in WI things can change quickly, in the event RUSD closes schools for weather, Siena follows suit. No one with the possible exception of maintenance is expected to report to work. Staff will receive an all users communication from Siena/Ms. Kimberly Gardner.
Current Handbook Language we will follow:
The school will be closed including CARES supervision, on days when Racine Unified School District is closed. Closings are announced over local radio (WISN 1130, WTMJ 620 / 94.5, WRJN 1400), television (FOX 6, TMJ4, CBS58, WISN 12), and their media websites. Parents will not hear our school name announced on public media unless there are specific circumstances affecting only our school or only all Catholic schools.
School closings will be announced in the media as Siena Catholic Schools of Racine. Staff will receive an email from Ms. Kimberly Gardner. Rarely used, but if a delayed start is announced for Racine Unified School District, St. Rita will follow the same schedule and delay the start to the day.
Parents may use their own discretion to decide whether to keep their children at home for safety. This absence will be recorded as an excused absence.
Safe Environment: How to sign up: Instructions.
