B リピーティング

Mary: Kenta, what are you looking at?
Kenta: Check these out! These toys are all made of wood. Aren’t they cool?
Mary: Yeah, they’re pretty common here. Old-fashioned toy shops like this sell a lot of vintage toys. Some of the toys here are probably older than us.
Kenta: Yeah, I can see that! Oh, and look! What do you call these in English? We call them kendama in Japanese.
Mary: I think they’re called cup-in-ball.
Kenta: Oh, okay! You know, I think they’re making a comeback now in Japan. Recently, I’ve been seeing a lot of children playing with them. Some kids have the old-fashioned wooden ones, but I’ve also seen ones made of plastic or metal that light up when you get the ball in the cup.
Mary: Whoa! Those are the new and improved ones, I guess.
Kenta: Yeah, I guess so. Oh, hey, look at these teddy bears! They’re really cute. I think I’ll actually get one.
Mary: A teddy bear? Really? You sure you wouldn’t rather have the cup-in-ball?
Kenta: Well, it’s not for me. I just found out that my wife is expecting. I’m going to be a dad!
Mary: No way! Congrats, Kenta! I’m happy for you.
メアリー: ケンタ、何を見ているの？
ケンタ: これを見てよ。このおもちゃは全て木でできているの。かっこよくない？
メアリー: うん。ここでは割と一般的だよ。ここみたいな古風なおもちゃ屋さんでは沢山のビンテージのおもちゃを売ってるの。ここのおもちゃのいくつかは多分私たちよりも歳をとっているよ。
ケンタ: うん。それは分かる。おぉ、見て！これらを英語で何て言うの？日本語ではけん玉って呼んでる。
メアリー: cup-in-ballって呼ばれていると思う。
ケンタ: なるほど！今日本で再ブームになっていると思う。最近、たくさんの子どもがそれで遊んでいるのをみるんだよね。昔風の木製のを持っている子どもいるけど、カップにボールを入れるとライトアップするプラスチックや金属でできたものも見たことある。
メアリー: わぁ。それは新しくて改良されたものなんだろうね。
ケンタ: うん、そうだと思う。お、これらのテディーベアーを見て。とても可愛い。あれを実際に買うと思う。
メアリー: テディーベアー？本当に？cup-in-ballを買った方がいいんじゃないの？
ケンタ: えぇと、それは僕用じゃないよ。妻が妊娠していることがわかったんだ。僕はパパになるんだよ。
メアリー: まさか。おめでとうケンタ。とても嬉しいよ。

You sure 確かなの？ （Are you sure？の省略）
wouldn’t rather have the cup-in-ball けん玉を買ったほうがいいのではない
（全体の訳として）本当は買わないほうがいいのではなくて買ったほうがいいんじゃないの？という意味になります！
*My wife is expecting. 自分の妻は妊娠しています。
expect は期待する、という意味がありますが、特に主語が女性で is expecting の形で使われるときは妊娠している、という意味になるので覚えておきましょう！

以下の指示に従って、書いた英語を見ずに、英語で話す練習をしてみましょう。完璧な英語を話す必要はないので、分かる範囲でとにかく口に出すのを意識します。答え方がわからない部分は、先生からフィードバックを受けた英語の文を確認します。合計３回繰り返します。
