Social Activism

Social Activism

Social activism happens any time you talk about climate change or the many related issues. It's a great way to help get others to act, to teach or learn about new concepts and resources. Social activism is a two-way street, where you can improve your outreach skills by listening to criticism, and help change hearts by demonstrating respect to those you outreach to.

The key to effective outreach lies in learning healthy communication skills. Check out our Communication page to find out how you can improve your skills today.

Hactivism

This doesn't mean hacking in the same way as portrayed in the media! "Hacking" is a term in the tech community that traditionally referred to the act of creating something new out of what little resources they had at the time: "Hacking together a solution."

If technology, programming, or web-design are your thing, then we invite you to join with existing organizations like the VeganHactivists who work in teams to create amazing resources like these!

Social Media

Can be a very effective way to reach a lot of people, but it can also harm your mental health or open the door to bullying even doxing. You may want to focus on remaining anonymous by learning to protect your identity and focusing on cyber security practices such as scrubbing your photos of geographic data, hiding your face, and remembering not to share you address with stranger.

Cyber Safety

I personally recommend using the free program ExifCleaner to clean metadata from cell phone or digital cameras before posting them online, as this data can be used by malicious people to identify and dox activists. Using this program also gives the added benefit of reducing the size of files which may make them easier to upload to certain sites.
