Mobility

Introduction

Mobility is something most of us take for granted until we have a relative or friend begin to struggle with aging or after an accident. However, for many families, mobility may be a struggle from birth onward. Most communities around the world are not designed with mobility impairments in mind, making it difficult for people throughout their life stages to access basic resources including libraries, schools, medical buildings, and government buildings. This is improving as awareness increases and building requirements improve over time, but many cities are already built with stone steps and other considerable barriers to everyday citizens.

When we create inclusive spaces, it doesn't just help those with life-long disabilities, but also people with temporary injuries, pregnant people, those with push chairs or prams, cyclists, and the elderly. We never know when illness, disease, or an accident may strike, so ensuring safe and accessible infrastructure can keep people safe and healthy for many generations, at any phase of life.

As climate change and pollution worsen, so does the impact on those with limited mobility. In fact factors of climate change and our current system actually increase our risk of premature births, birth defects, serious illnesses (thanks to the rise of zoonoses and antibiotic resistance), and serious injuries, so tackling these issues with mobility in mind is simply a win, win, win situation for everyone.

Mobility Equipment

Bikes, Trikes, & Related Devices

Not all mobility issues require a cane or wheelchair. For many invisible disabilities, using a bike, trike, or related devices can give a person far more freedom than they might otherwise have. Click the Bikes button to learn more about this topic, including how bike-friendly infrastructure makes for disability-friendly communities too!

Click the Disability & Cycling button to learn more about how cycling can benefit people with disabilities and injuries specifically. There is also a section about spaces that make travel safer as well as small directory of companies/organizations which make equipment are available.
