Hi my name is Lauren and I’m in grade 10! I’ve been creating art for a really long time, as long as I can remember (to be fair I can’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday though). I’ve always created art for school but my mom is also a visual artist which means all the tools and materials have been there for me on bored weekends and lazy school breaks.
I tried to take art more seriously a couple years ago but when I went to an art studio I got really intimidated so that never took off. I think so many people tell you that art is “a nice hobby” and for me that has been one of the major reasons why I never considered it so thoughtfully because everyone told me not to, despite my love for it. I came to a decision last month to take IB art which was really hard for me to make, but now I can’t wait for next year.
I have typically just used paper and pencils for my art unless it has been a school project, however lately I have been trying to push myself to explore new mediums. So far I have been painting random objects, making sculptures out of pipe-cleaners, and (hot gluing) together clay figurines. I hope to try more mediums but especially digital art and actually colouring things (colouring is scary) soon. Additionally, I would love to consider photography more and photo editing.
I think one of the biggest things I want is to begin creating pieces that are more tangible, create emotion, and are very interpretive, but with a clear message. Unfortunately, I also want to have the technical skills to pull those off, which requires a lot of practice, something I am still working towards getting motivated for.
Try not to judge me too harshly.
ARTWORK PORTFOLIO:
A box I painted! It holds my mini Crayola markers now.
The 3D experiments… guess which two aren’t held together by hot glue.
First Adobe Illustrator piece… I tried to learn as I went, which honestly went better than expected??
I never got to finish this piece, but this snail is my pride and joy. (Not a great photo because it was for personal use to see how much work I did each class. I thought it could help me work faster but it didn’t, I just have a lot of very similar photos that I’m too nostalgic to get rid of.)
Our Monsters and Myths unit earlier this year and my first time using watercolours. My message and concept is wonder.
This is my most recent piece that I created for art class. The subject is Frida Kahlo. (I learned a little too recently that the quote is from a book and author that is problematic, so while I can’t really change my piece, I can acknowledge that.)
