This 6-ft. diameter circle of black cloth will reveal an extra-dimensional space when fully spread out on a surface.
The extra-dimensional space only appears if the cloth is full spread on a (primarily) horizontal flat surface. The space appears as a hole in the surface leading into a cylindrical space. The extra-dimensional space will not appear if the portable hole is spread out on a surface and not held there by gravity (ie. unless magic is used, the portable hole does not operate on a ceiling or a wall). Unfolding the portable hole is a complex activity.
As a complex activity, a creature can locate and grasp the edge of the hole and roll it, converting the extra-dimensional hole into cloth again.
The extra-dimensional space is a 6-ft. diameter cylinder 10-ft. deep with a volume of roughly 283 cubic feet (the tank volume is equal to 2,115 gallons [us] or 8,006 liters).
Each portable hole maintains it's own unique extra-dimensional space and this space remains while the portable hole is folded up. Thus, the space can be used to store things. The space is a constant 70 degrees F., gravity is always toward the "floor" and the space never jostles no matter what is happening around the hole. If opened on a moving platform, the hole moves with the platform (but from within the extra-dimensional space there is no sensation of movement).
Creatures can enter the hole while it is open. However, the if the hole is folded up, creatures requiring air will begin to suffocate after 10 rounds. Air seems to disperse once the portable hole is "closed", although a vacuum is never reached.
The cloth can continue to be folded down to the size and thickness of a handkerchief (no encumbrance weight). No matter how much matter fills the portable hole, it weighs only as much as mundane cloth would.
Unlike a bag of holding, the sides of the space are not soft and cannot be punctured by incidental contact with sharp objects. A portable hole cannot be over-filled to bursting. If anything breaks the extra-dimensional barrier, the portable hole's edge cannot be found to fold or close it.
The portable hole makes item saves as a piece of magical cloth, whether in cloth form or as an open space.
If the portable hole is damaged or destroyed, anything within is lost. A damaged portable hole becomes a mundane piece of cloth.
A portable hole's exta-dimensional space will not open if unfolded within another extra-dimensional space (e.g. in the space created by a rope trick spell or inside another portable hole).
However, a special condition exists regarding bags of holding and portable holes. If a bag of holding is placed within a portable hole, a rift to the Astral plane is torn in the space: bag and hole alike are sucked into the void and forever lost along with any items contained within (the portable hole becomes a mundane piece of black cloth). If a portable hole is placed within a bag of holding, it opens a rift to the Astral plane as the hole, the bag, and any creatures within a 10-foot radius are sucked in (no save), destroying the items in the process and flinging anything carried throughout the plane. Creatures drawn in may make an Intelligence save vs. Spell to (quickly) discern how to move in the Astral and hop out before the rift closes in 5 segments. Creatures that find themselves trapped on the Astral plane must use magic to return to the Prime plane (such as a plane shift spell).
