These small stone are found in a variety of shapes and sizes. Each grants a different power.
Activate Ion Stones. [innate] (major) If one or more ion stones are grasped and tossed in the air near their head, the stones will begin to orbit around the creature's head appearing as colored halos. Once orbiting, the creature gains the power granted by the individual stone. Any number of stones may be employed at once. The stones orbit just above the possessor's head in a radius of 1-ft. to 3-ft.
Retrieve Ion Stones. [complex] The possessor can retrieve an active ion stone orbiting their own head and put it away as a complex activity. When retrieved, the possessor immediately loses all aspects granted by that power.
There are a number of different ion stones with different hues, shapes, and powers. The magical aura for all stones is alteration, unless noted otherwise. These are the known types:
Pale Green Prism. [conjuration/summoning] If the possessor has no class levels, this stone grants an additional hit die. If the possessor is multi-classed or dual-classed (including a bard), when the stone is activated, the class to be increased is determined randomly. The class determination "sticks" for 24 hours (even if the stone is retrieved and re-activated). After 24 hours, when the stone is activiated again, the class is again determined randomly. In a similar vein, hit points must be rolled randomly (and the value will stick for 24 hours). If the possessor is a spell caster, additional spell slots granted due to level gain are available only once per rest period and if lost due to retrieving the stone, cannot be filled again until another rest (of the appropriate time period) occurs. Likewise, class abilities with limits on usage are lost for that period should the stone become inactive (whether used or not).
Pearly White Spindle. [necromantic] This ion stone will not restore life to a possessor that dies (typically due to the fact it bcome inactive if the possessor loses conciousness).
Pale Lavender Ellipsoid. [abjuration] When found, this stone will be able to absorb 1d4 x 10 spell energy levels as per a rod of absorption before becoming a burned out stone. The highest level spell that can be absorbed is 4th level (and the attempt will fail against 5th level or higher spells). Unlike the rod, the stone does not allow the possessor to access this spell energy (it is gone). The XP/GP values are per spell energy level remaining in the stone when found.
Lavender & Green Ellipsoid. [abjuration] When found, this stone will be able to absorb 2d4 x 10 spell energy levels as per a rod of absorption before becoming a burned out stone. The highest level spell that can be absorbed is 8th level (and the attempt will fail against 9th level spells). Unlike the rod, the stone does not allow the possessor to access this spell energy (it is gone). The XP/GP values are per spell energy level remaining in the stone when found.
Vibrant Purple Prism. Treat the stone exactly as a ring of spell storing when determining spells stored and use. However, the stone can hold a maximum of 2d6 spell levels (when determining spells contained, stop once the limit is reached and if over, there may be unused spell level capacity that is lost). Spells stored cannot be replaced and when all spells are cast, the stone becomes burned out. There is no attunement period. The XP/GP values are per spell level contained by the stone.
Dull Gray Ion Stone. [alteration; psionic] This stone is burned out and grants no magical power. However, it will activate as an ion stone, circling about the possessor's head. If the possessor is a psionic, the stone grants a +10 bonus to psionic ability. Unlike other stones, this bonus will stack, to a maximum bonus of +50.
Ion Stone Attributes. An ion stone makes item saves as per a gem or hard metal (whichever is better) with a +3 bonus due to magic. When active, the stone has an AC -4 (contact AC -4) and can take 1 shp before being destroyed. The stone has DR/+1 and is immune to slashing, piercing, or chopping damage.
An ion stone will immediately deactivate (and may go whizzing off somewhere) if the possessor becomes unconscious (or falls asleep).
Ion stones are not considered attended items. Ion stones may be targeted as per unattended objects by attacks or those seeking to grab them (using a melee contact attack). Thus, any area of effect damage may require the stone to make an item save versus the attack type (per the GM) whether the possessor makes their save or not.
If two stones of the same type are activated by the same possessor, their powers do not stack.
If a possessor with an active ion stone become invisible, the ion stone does not also become invisible. The ion stone is not normally impacted by magic that changes the possessor's appearance (i.e. camouflage). A mirror image spell will duplicate the appearance of active stones.
Typically, 1d10 stones will be found (duplicates will be burned out stones).
