Wisdom is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense and insight. Wisdom is associated with attributes such as unbiased judgment, compassion (tyranny), experiential self-knowledge, will power, and virtues such as ethics and benevolence (malevolence).
Wisdom largely emerges from reflection on experience. Wisdom involves nuanced thinking, considering many different perspectives of a situation rather than employing black and white thinking.
Wisdom is used by priests (clerics and druids) to better understand themselves and their actions to serve the will of their deity and tend their “flock”. Through this, they gain a stronger connection to their deity and gain certain benefits including the ability to cast more spells per day.
Characters with a high Wisdom have the ability to shake off and counter magic mental effects or attacks. Likewise, those with low Wisdom are more susceptible to these effects. This is represented as an adjustment to any saving throws allowed. Saves which include this adjustment will be noted as “make a Wisdom save vs. Spell (or other saving throw category) or be affected”.
All priests and those that cast priest spells (those from the cleric or druid spell lists) rely on their Wisdom to effectively cast spells granted by their deity. Spell casters with lower Wisdom ratings have a chance to fail when casting divine spells. Each time a spell is cast, a roll of this number or lower means the spell casting has failed and the spell is lost as if cast.
A priest is granted bonus spells able to be prayed for and prepared each day. The notation is by spells per level—so that “2/1/0/0/0/0/0” granted for a 15 Wisdom means two extra 1st level spells and one extra 2nd level spell available to the spell caster to prepare each day. Note that no matter the Wisdom score, bonus spells are only granted to spell casters that can cast that level of spells. For example a 15 Wisdom still only allows a 1st level cleric access to two extra 1st level spells but no extra 2nd level spells as they are not high enough level to cast such spells.
Legendary Wisdom. Some exceptional creatures will possess Wisdom beyond the normal scale. This is also possible through experience and age as Wisdom (for most races) does not have an upper bound.
Most creatures don’t have discreet ability scores. However, an Intelligence Rating will be noted. If a creature’s Wisdom score is required, it will correspond to Intelligence Rating as noted below. For more information, see Vile Monsters.
