This small cube (3/4-inch) protects the wielder from cold effects.
Activate Field. [innate] (major; continuous) This cube is activated or deactivated by pressing one side. When activated, it creates a barely discernable field that is cube-shaped with area of 10 feet on a side centered on the possessor (or on the cube itself, if the item is later placed on a surface).
The field moves with the cube. If the cube is covered, the field is suppressed.
The temperature within this area is always at least 65°F.
In the area of effect, the field will absorb cold-based damage and anything in the area of effect is not subject to effects caused by cold.
Cold effects (spells, magic item effects) that have a point of origin external to the cube can be cast/invoked from within the cube.
If the field is subjected to more than 50 points of cold damage in any 1 round (from one or multiple attacks), it collapses and the cube cannot be reactivated for at least 1 hour. If the field absorbs more than 100 points of cold damage in any 10-round period, the cube is destroyed.
If the ambient temperature outside of the cube is extremely cold, the field's ability to absorb damage is lessened by -2 points per 10 degrees F. under 0 degrees F. Fractions count as 10 degrees. Wind chill should be a factor. Thus, if the temperature external to the cube is -22 degrees F.; (i.e. 0 to -10/-11 to -20/-21 to -22 = -6), the cube can absorb only 44 points of cold damage in 1 round before becoming dormant and if it absorbs 94 points of cold damage in a 10-round period, it will be destroyed.
Only cold damage is affected. Thus, hail stones (whether magical or mundane) striking creatures within the field will still do physical (bludgeoning) damage.
