Potions or oils are liquids that hold a magical effect or spell. These are normally kept in sealed vials for easy transportation. In order to release the magic, a potion must be consumed or an oil poured and smeared on the subject.
Drink Potion. [delaying] (major) You retrieve your potion and consume it. See Drink a Potion.
Apply Magical Oil. [delaying] (major) You retrieve your vial and sprinkle it upon the recipient within 10 feet. See Apply a Magical Oil.
Administer a Potion. [complex] You retrieve your potion, kneel/move/crouch, and carefully administer it to another (typically unconscious or helpless) creature—taking care to make sure the liquid goes down the right way. See Administer a Potion.
Caster Level All potions function at Caster Level 7 unless stated otherwise.
Casting Time See Drink a Potion.
Range An effect centered on the imbiber/applier is "0"; Otherwise other effects will list a range (similar to spells).
Area of Effect See Casting Spells.
Duration See Casting Spells. If a duration is not listed, it will be 40 rounds plus 1d4 x10 rounds. Any variability in the duration will not be known by the imbiber.
Save See Casting Spells.
Aura The notation is used for detect magic effects (priest-cast detection is larger grained than magic-user): [priest]/[magic-user]
Class Requirement If only certain character classes can use the item, it will be noted here. Creatures without character classes typically cannot use items meant for a specific character class (per the GM).
Encumbrance Potions are normally found in vials: 1-lb. (glass vial)
Doses Most potions have one dose and must be fully consumed to work. Some offer doses (smaller gulps of the liquid) providing lesser effects and/or duration. If not specifically called out, the potion cannot be physically separated or the entire liquid will lose it's magic.
XP Value/GP Value These are the requisite values for whole and fully charged items. If partially used (doses quaffed), the values are at the remaining ratio. See also XP for Treasure and Magic Items.
Effects If a spell effect is indicated, it will be a magic-user spell, or, if not a magic-user spell, a cleric spell.
If more than two potions are introduced to the same subject at the same time (i.e. a new potion is consumed while the duration of two previous potions are ongoing), the set will interact with each other in unexpected ways (this will also occur if two (or more) potions are admixed outside of a body).
Multi-dose potions count as a single potion if quaffed at once (cf. potion of extra-healing or water breathing).
