These boots allow the wearer to move without sound.
Description. This pair of (low, soft) boots appear to be made of dark, supple leather with contrasting stitching. They are often embroidered with elven runes worked into arboreal motifs.
The boots are water resistant and offer protection for the feet from freezing surfaces.
The boots offer the wearer complete silence during normal movement in normal circumstances.
Silent movement increase chances of surprise (Surprise Others +17%) if worn by creatures without an adjustment to surprise others. If worn by creatures with a bonus to surprise others that is related to stealth (per the GM; due to silent movement, even in part), the bonus due to the boots is +10%.
If paired with invisibility, the two effects allow automatic surprise (of 1 segment) for creatures without exceptional scent, detection of air movement or other ability unrelated to vision or sound of movement (e.g. echolocation).
Unusual Circumstances Allowing Detection Based on Sound
Certain circumstances will make detection via sound of movement possible:
If the wearer is also wearing plated armor there is a +5% chance of detection
If the wearer is moving across a noisy surface, there is a +5% chance of detection (e.g. dead leaves, wet mud, a squeaky floor, etc.).
If the wearer interacts with any objects other than the terrain they walk upon or through vegetation, that activity will emit sound as normal for those not wearing the boots. E.g. Opening doors, dragging an object, moving through a curtain, etc.
Boots Sizing
Most (d%; 01-90) boots of elvenkind only fit slender humanoids between 4-ft. and 5.5-ft tall.
A few (d%; 91-00) will resize to fit larger or smaller humanoids (1-ft. to 10-ft. tall).
One Boot. If only a single boot is worn, the effect is that the sound of the creature's movement if dropped in half but no other benefit is gained (the creature makes a normal amount of noise [out to half radius] and objects interacted with make the normal amount of noise [out to normal radius]).
