This rod allows the wielder to absorb spells.
Once the rod is grasped, it imparts its abilities of absorption and release to the possessor as well as the exact number of current spell energy levels currently stored and remaining potential (see Charges).
Absorb Spell. [immediate] When a target spell (see limitations) is cast at an individual holding the rod in their hand, the wielder can choose to absorb the spell as an immediate action. The wielder knows the spell level but no other details. An absorbed spell has no effect, even if it would affect other creatures (e.g. a hold person spell) as the spell is completely absorbed. Once absorbed, the spell powers the rod, filling it with potential spell energy.
Release Spell Energy. [spell-like] The rod can hold up to 50 spell energy levels. These can be used to allow the wielder to cast any prepared spell as a spell-like ability without the loss of the spell. Thus, a wielder who absorbed 12 levels of spells can the spell energy to cast a cone of cold as a spell-like ability (assuming the cone of cold spell were currently memorized). The cone of cold uses 5 levels leaving the rod with 7 levels remaining. The wielder keeps the cone of cold spell prepared and can cast it later.
Limitations
The rod only affects incantations, invocations from scrolls, or spell-like abilities that specifically target the wearer at range.
Invocations from items other than scrolls are not affected.
Spell-like or innate abilities cast using items are not affected.
Area of effect spells are not affected.
Touch spells are not affected.
Examples of spells or effects that can be absorbed: a magic missile spell, a maze spell, a feeblemind spell, a light spell targeting the wielder's eyes, a telekinesis effect (spell-like) by a demon targeting the wielder, etc.
Examples of spells or effects not affected: A magic missile cast from a wand, a slow spell, a fireball, a bestow curse spell, a hold person spell cast from a ring of spell storing, etc.
Charges. The rod does not possess charges in the normal sense, however, each rod of absorption can only ever absorb 50 spell levels, maximum. Once this limit is reached and the last remaining spell level released, the rod turns to dust, destroyed. When a rod is found, roll 5d10 for the number of spell levels remaining (the result is the number of spell levels used), then roll a d% for the number of spell energy levels currently contained in that rod. For example, if a 20 was rolled on the 5d10, the rod has 30 spell levels of absorption capability remaining. A d% is rolled and the result is 50, the rod contains 10 unspent spell energy levels available to power casting.
