These bracers provide a base armor class protection to those not wearing armor.
Description. These items appear to be wrist or arm guards, sometimes etched with symbols of protection or depictions of vigilant-looking animals or fortifications. Materials can be leather, metal, wood, or other (with a high degree of variability).
When worn, bracers of defense grant the wearer the designated base armor class (see the table). This effect is magical.
The wearer has no armor defense adjustment while the bracers provide armor class protection.
This item will work with—and will be considered the base AC—when paired with other items or effects granting magical protection bonuses to AC (e.g. ring of protection or cloak of protection or certain spells). Dexterity and similar adjustments also apply to overall AC.
Bracers of defense will not operate if armor of any type is worn (whether magical or mundane) or if any type of shield (any item granting a shield bonus to AC) is employed. i.e. If bracers of defense AC 2 are worn with a suit of non-magical leather armor, the wearer's base AC/AD is 8.
If worn by a creature with a natural armor class, use the better of the two values. The GM may apply an AC bonus for creatures that are noted as being small or fast if the bracer's base AC value is better.
