Sources of Resistance (TPC Analysis)

Used to help a team discover how to frame the need for change more broadly and perhaps break some habits about change only as it applies to a short-term threat.

Technical

Most common
People fear they lack skills or resources to change
Habit, fear of the unknown, prior investment/sunk costs in old way
Outward expressions of personal fears or doubts

Political

Loss of power, control, decision making ability, status or self-perception
Struggles of turf, relationships, who gets to talk to whom

Cultural

Most challenging
Different than “how we do things here”
Old cultural mindsets, the good old days, blinders, afraid to let go

Questions to Uncover Resistance

Prepare for pushback…Resistance to change is normal, natural, and inevitable.

How can we mitigate concerns together?
Why is that?
How did you arrive at that?
How does this relate to other concerns?

BE Curious …Tone counts!

When Source of Resistance is Technical:

Share information
Seek involvement
Offer education, training
Provide encouragement, coaches
Run pilots, demonstrations, etc.
Build small wins, communicate them
Focus on big picture vs. details
Modify organizational systems that enable and support people
Answer all questions as they arise

When Source of Resistance is Political:

Do a stakeholder analysis to understand influence patterns
Be honest
Provide “safe exits” and/or alternate job designs
Modify measures and communicate them
Clarify roles, responsibilities, accountabilities
Empathize with loss, gain

When Source of Resistance is Cultural:

Do a cultural audit to uncover: What beliefs drive us?
Get people involved personally
Articulate desired mindset and gaps
Redefine measures and rewards
Position change as bridging future with past (vs. tearing down the past)
Make known those core values that remain unchanged

Stakeholder Analysis

Used to develop a detailed sense of who the key stakeholders are, how they currently feel about the change initiative, and the level of support they need to exhibit for the change initiative to have a good chance for success.

Influence Strategy

Used to help the team assess the issues and concerns of each stakeholder.
